woulda posted this last night but fell out from exhaustion. i found out a ext cab 8ft bed is a lotta damn truck. trans went out so i had to get a trailer to haul it. loaded it up on a trailer had about an inch left over and no room left on the sides. and for anyone who wants to ever have a ass pinching nervous has hell ride load a 6500lbs truck on a trailer and tow it with a 01 GMC reg cab short bed 1500 with no trailer brakes through early morning DC traffic and a bunch of hills. not a ride i wanna do again any time soon haha. with any luck i'll get a call on Monday saying what exactly is wrong with my trans and they fix it.

Should have posted your problem here before taking it to a tranny shop.......We might have been able to save you some cash......

& ya....it's a big truck. That was what I drove before my 99. What a brute of a truck though....well, until the Honda tried to go under it. I miss that truck.

I've had to trailer my 95 long bed a couple times... Luckily I used to work for an ag equipment retailer, so I can borrow a trailer that fits a full size truck just fine. But I would be really nervous trying to pull this trailer with a 1/2 ton truck, we usually use 3/4 or 1 tons.

I lost 3rd and 4th i've known the trans has been getting worse so i knew it would happen. The only reason i took it to the shop is i need my truck and i don't mess with transmissions at all i didn't even want to pull it and take it to them to make it cheaper. i'll work on the rest of the truck engine included but not a trans.

2. running it is 12.6 volts. off it registers 0.00 volts.

3. 12.4 volts off and 12.8 volts running.

4. 12.4 when i took the alternator wires off last night (1800) . 12.4 when I went out to go to school this morning (0620)

I'd say your wiring is fine then and there are no draw leaks anywhere, and that your alternator does in fact actuate when the engine is running but it does not produce enough current to keep up with the rest of your truck. Likely a new alternator is in order - now may be a good time to consider the 3G conversion if your budget allows it...

jayson

I am wondering what the 3g is also.

I got a rebuilt alternator from advance, just waiting till later to put it on.

3G is a 3rd generation alternator swap. You swap your 2g for a 2g.

3g is a much better alternator. There is a ton of info on the swap. Just search.

skyfox10 10-23-2010 02:30 PM

"In 1996 Ford publicly recognized the fire hazard caused by the 2G alternator and released TSB 96214. This alternator design caused increased resistance and heat which could damage the wire harness and alternator. A small percentage of vehicles actually caught on fire!

Fords 3G alternator was a giant leap in technology and quality. The 3G was internally regulated, used two internal cooling fans, sealed bearings, and had a superior battery stud. The 3G’s were more efficient, and produced more amperage at idle than any of its predecessors."

Ok WTF is this?? if the 3G produced more current at idle, then why does this graph on fordfuelinjection.com show just the opposite??

Today, I looked at my 79 F100 (General Jackson) while working on my 62 Fairlane 500.

No one said they did more at idle. Just throw a smaller pulley on it. My alt does more at idle than the stocker does max :-X10

truckerboy 10-23-2010 04:20 PM

Either way, that seems to lead to a lot of wiring work. I think that I will just stick to the factory set up.

I take it you skipped over my post just before that one post. So I'll show you where I got that quote from...
