I've been hoping that something in my schedule changed, like getting fired, or something not quite that drastic. Most of my vacation is already scheduled so I can't take another week off.

No, this company is not very friendly. If the client I'm working for has the day off, then I have to either work it or take the day as vacation. I'm thinking that they are used to staffing with a lot of H-1B visa people that they can beat on all the time. When they bought the company I worked for they didn't quite know what to do with all of us non-visa people. I've considered making a change but if I'm going to retire in 2 years I'm not sure it's worth the hassle.
