I ask because I truely do not know, why can't you just swap in a Lightning/Harley motor out of a salvaged truck and put it into your F250? Is there that much involved? I am just curious why not.

Furian 06-20-2009 06:00 AM

2004 was the last year that Ford made the F150 Lightning. It had the 5.4L 2V engine and produced 380 HP. However, I do not want to go backwards in technology moving from the 3V to the 2V engine. The F150 Harley Davidson (2006-2007) used the same engine that I have in my 2005 Super Duty (300 HP/365 TQ) so there are no advantages.

If Ford had continued to make the Lightning in 2005-2007 using the 5.4L 3V engine, then that would be the obvious solution and one that I would pursue.

Its a step forward for me I have the 5.4 2v in my F250. I have just thought about what makes the swap so hard? I know the 5.4 in an 03 F250 sits higher in the engine bay than it does in an 03 F150, I compared mine to a friend who has a 02 Lightning. Maybe clearance? I don't see why one couldn't do it, but im sure out there some one has the answer to that and can educate me.

Well, bad news... I heard back from Whipple Industries and they have no plans to provide a supercharger for the Super Duties with the 5.4L engines. :-banghead Here's their response:

We are not planning anything for the F250-350. The computering is different and I am not sure of the hardware as we have never installed it on the F250-350."

I'm not giving up! The next inquiry will be with Roush Industries... stayed tuned! :-headbang

Don't get discouraged by the tuning bit. Sniper's Special Forces suite allows for a power adder (Nitrous, Turbo, Supercharger, and something else) without having to customize the fuel/spark trims. Any decent tuner can write a tune around the blower.

Roush had one the 5.4 3v F150. I don't recall seeing anything for the superduty layout. You may also want to check SHM, he had some odd plenums.

hey guys procharger also makes a sys for the 5.4 3v f150, maybe this would be better all brackets are fabed just plumbing issues from what i see, i know there is a bunch of room under the hood of my f250 with the 5.4, little cut here and trim there, muffler shop to bend up some new tubes in/out of head unit and you got it. but on another note furian made ref. to eng. ratings lot pepole forget that those are fly wheel ratings not rear wheel ratings. horse power tv did a show on a f150 5.4 3v 4x2 it made alittle over 230hp and about the same or under for torque @ the rear wheels my jaw droped when i saw this. it took a supercharger, headers, cat-back, and diablo tune just to get back to the factory flywheel specs. so imagine now same motor in a f250 4x4, big 5 speed torqu shift, lot more truck, thats why rite as i speak now i am looking for another truck, tired of no aftermarket availiablity, and the real kicker was towing my best friends 28' enclosed trailer empty got 7-8.5 mpg and the truck barley would shift into 5th the slightest grade and back to forth and yes its geared 3.73

I just sent a follow-up to Roush Industries about the possibility of a supercharger for our 5.4L engine. I won't give up until I receive a response... one way or another.

If they do come out will it fit all 5.4L 3v or just your year of truck?

I would hope that IF they decide to make it available for our 5.4L engine that they include ALL applicable years (2005- present). I would think that is in everyone's interest.

The 5.4l is on its way out. Why would a company want to invest all the money in a product when the 5.4l in the SDs will probably be dropped in a couple years anyway?

It's not a ground up design but a tweek to an existing product. That's why I have such a hard time understanding the reluctance to expand the application. 95% of the F150 supercharger kit are compatible with Super Duty. There may be the requirement for modified brackets, air intake tubing, and of course the Torqshift transmission of the later models. But the main components are 100% compatible.

As for the 5.4L engine no longer being produced and therefore no desire to produce aftermarket parts, I have to disagree. Doug's Headers just released several new headers for the "old" Ford and Chevy engines. How many of these engines are on the road compared to the number of SD's with the 5.4L engine?

Most companies want a 6 month payoff or they won't bother. The supercharger companies can do it but they obviously don't feel the payback is worth it. I tend to agree with them because I honestly don't forsee many kits being sold for a 5.4l SD. Theres a BIG difference in the people who say they will buy a kit and th epeople who actually buy a kit. I suspect the same thing would be true for a 6.8l SC kit. Whipple and Kenne Belle already had a SC kit for the 2V 6.8l years ago and dropped it. The sales must have not been there, even though the R&D, fitting and tuning was already done.

Your comparing headers to a full supercharger kit. LOL. Theres a lot less R&D into a set of headers than a full supercharger kit. BTW 67-70 mustangs/cougers and 67-69 Camaro and 68-72 Chevy II, Novas are pretty popular vehicles.

True. But the header market has plenty of competition. The supercharger market for the SD 5.4L does not even exist. Whoever bring the product to market will own it for several years.

I would tend to think that if someone wanted to build a kit (consumer) the companies could help you piece it together. One company not mentioned is sts. With a remote mount turbo system the fit is easier and it would lack the use of a intercooler. I have seen a hand built turbo on a 5.4 f150 and when they tuned it it was making 500+hp... I would think a sts style setup and a sct with custom tuning could be very comparable. I think the main issue is most new truck consumers will opt for the more power in the heavyduty segment if needed initailly. Yes there might be a demand for their product but with kits costing 4 grand a lot of people could spend the same coin and upgrade to a better engine setup or even truck. If you were to spend that 4k and do rebates offers and the cash for clunkers one could get a large chunk of a new truck right there.
