To be honest I have no idea about the milage. It reads 7100 right now, but was recorded at 35k in '86. My guess is that it's at 207k.

I plan to make it my work truck/driver. I have a motorcycle that I can ride 80% of the time where I live, so calling it a daily driver might be an exaggeration. :P

It's got 4 in the floor (transmission code B), the 4.7L l6, and it's hard for me to make out much more from the sticker.

Ok the "B" trany looks to be a over drive (3sp with 4th the OD) known as a SROD is that right?

If you have a L6 in the truck that would be a 4.9/300 six. Someone could break down the VIN to make sure.
Too bad I cant make out the lower part of the sticker as that is were all the information is.

So you will fix it up to be a nice driver, that's cool.
I kind of started the same way and went over board with a cab off frame rebuild. Mine has a 300 six with a 4sp, granny low so you start in 2nd and drive it like a 3sp.

Just make sure you keep it away from stop sign runners, they have a way of putting a damper on all the fun: picked mine up Tuesday night, and by Wednesday at 6:30 this is what it looked like.

Man that hurts :'( I take it you are OK and not in jail for killing the other driver.
Looks to need a nose and maybe the front frame is bent what else is bad?
Don't know how close you are to me but I have a 4x2 long bed frame, no rot just a little surface rust from my 81 parts truck I let go cheap (free) just come get it once I pull the bed off if that would help fix the truck.

Depending on what insurance says this truck might become a frame off restoration. Luckily I was in charlotte nc when the accident (Atlanta) happened. So I had a nice 4 hour ride to stew and collect my self. I'm sure I would have had choice words. My lovely wife after bribing the truck to a stop got out and said "are you ok, congratulations you just bought a new truck, hope you like blue" I love that woman lol

Most of the time you can buy the car/truck back from the insur. co. just make sure they don't mark the title is a way you cant get plates for it. I don't remember what that is maybe someone else does and will post up.

That's crazy. . . Funny enough, I picked up my new truck from Charlotte NC on Saturday and drove it back home. We almost could have crossed paths. :P

Yeah, driving it home I started in 2nd 100% of the time, as 1st seemed like a granny gear to me. The L6 is indeed the 4.9/300, the same as my dads truck has. The most urgent repair it needs right now is the passenger window doesn't roll up. The interior is trashed as well, but I'm not going to worry about that until I have all the seals in all of the windows, and have fixed the big hole in the floorboard.

Then I wonder if someone swapped the trany out for a T18/T19 as they have the granny first gear but no over drive.

Your sticker said it should have an OD trany. From what I have heard with the trucks rear gearing you would not be able to start in 2nd gear if it was an OD trany.
My T18 picture below does yours look like it? The SROD (Single Rod Over Drive) does not have the PTO plate on the side.

Sorry no pictures (yet) of my SROD.

If you are looking to replace the floor https://tabcoparts.com/ makes good sheet metal panel replacements as I used them for my 81 F100, floors, rockers, cab corners, rear door posts, lower inside & outside left door, a frame off rebuild.

When I need the window rubbers I think I am going thru LMC as I think they have everything as a set, left & right.

Dave,

I will let you know what I find the moment I get a chance to look. Right now everything in the engine compartment and underbelly of the truck is caked in mud or 31 years of accumulated grease. I will be going to town on the thing with degreaser and a pressure washer this weekend, at which point I will probably be able to get a better look at the transmission. From what I can see it looks like it may match your pictures though. In my research, I found a number of people who claim that the B code was a manual misprint on the 81 F100's, and it's really the T18. I couldn't find any solid info to back that up though. . .

So I got the chance to go to town on the truck for about an hour with a pressure washer, and another hours soak with degreaser. Transmission turned out to be a bright red Borg Warner, so it's not the Clark SROD. Probably is the T-18/19.

I'm probably going to have to swap out the entire floorboard, so I'll be messing around on Tabcoparts to see what they have. Thanks!

On another note, I think we knocked about 75 lbs of mud off of the undercarriage, and a solid 10lbs of grease and gunk from the engine bay. I will upload a couple pictures today after I get the intake manifold and distributer cap/plugs back on.

Think of the better acceleration and MPG you will have!

Seriously though, it is such a good feeling to get things cleaned up. I hate it when I can't work on a truck w/o getting filthy.

FuzzFace2 04-02-2017 09:46 AM

When I picked up my truck with my trailer I went by work and used the pressure washer. When I got home and started working on it you would never know it was pressure washed!

I did not plan on a cab off frame rebuild it just turned out that way.
Floors, cab corners, rockers, rear door posts and the lower half of the left door both inside & out side. I also swap the non-AC fire wall for an AC one.

Truck is ready for primer just waiting for weather & time to do this and only took a year and 4 months so far.

Another site I found for buying new metal is c2cfabrication.com, all their products are supposedly made in Detriot and they have a wide selection, though you may have to search under Bronco to find some of the cab parts

Congrats on your new project. Lurch sounds like a great name for it :-X22

f-100dan 04-03-2017 01:26 AM

So I'm putting together an album of the past couple days' work, and I'll assemble it and upload it once she's back in my garage.

As for the trans, I think I've determined it to be the T-18/19. Not certain if it could be anything else.

Dave: Your truck looks great. I look forward to when Lurch can be hit with that primer. :)

Mark: All I could find on there for my truck was rocker panels(Which I do need, to be sure) but my buddy was able to find the floorboards for his '77 F-100 on there, and he was pretty happy. Thanks!

Alan: Thanks man! If you ever want to come give me a hand, drinks are on me.

Actually, if anyone ever wants to drop by and help out, drinks are on me. . .

The promised album:

Start to finish, here is the progress made from Saturday to Monday:

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...e80c0c14e0.jpg

Lurch when I first picked her up

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...94c3b69fca.jpg

Rough interior. I wish I had taken more pictures. It was truly filthy.

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...2517ea9bb9.jpg

This is the only photo I took of the engine bay before I cleaned it. There was mud on top of the steering column, the fenders, the brake booster. . . And you couldn't even tell that the engine was blue under all that crud.

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...7cca7869dc.jpg

first photo I took after we got her cleaned up a bit. We probably knocked 50 lbs of mud off of the undercarriage, and there's still more.

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...6cdc2f3223.jpg

Another angle.

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...34f45cfb32.jpg

Having some fun after hosing down the interior.

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...ecacbe7da7.jpg

Junkyard find bench seat from an 81 F-150. The upholstery on this one is almost perfect, and the seat actually slides in the rail.

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...11d01e26b6.jpg

I decided I would figure out why my brakes were so weak. . . Needless to say, I went and bought new pads.

https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...90d17afcf6.jpg

A downpour hit right as I was getting the last spring on. It's all assembled in this picture.

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...8de34addb1.jpg

I got more than a little wet while I was finishing that job though.

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...ac769c0723.jpg

And here is the engine bay as it sits right now. Looks nice, but you may notice that it's mission 5-6 vacuum hoses. She runs great without them, but I went ahead and ordered some tubing to get everything in place anyway.

Next project is to finish redoing the brakes and brake lines, then I'll install the new vacuum hoses. Nearly 100% of my exhaust is escaping before it leaves the engine bay, so after the vacuum hoses I will probably put in a new exhaust manifold gasket, and redo the tailpipe. (As you might imagine, the tailpipe is a honeycomb of busted and rusted rust crusted dust.)

Gary Lewis 04-04-2017 06:42 AM

Wow! You did a LOT of work! Lurch is really coming along. Well done. :-X22
