65 and later 289 and 302 engines have 6 bolt bell housings.

5 bolt bell housings used 1962/64 and on 1965 Mustang 260/289's assembled before 8/23/1964. 260's cancelled from 8/23/1964.

Two different 221/260/289 timing covers and water pumps: Before 8/23/64, the pump is aluminum, uses a specific timing cover.

From 8/23/1964, the pump is cast iron, uses a different timing cover.

i never saw one, just know they existed.

221 & 260 introduced in new for 1962 midsize Ford Fairlane & Mercury Meteor.

221 was only installed in these cars and was cancelled at the end of the 1963 model run, as was the Mercury Meteor.

Thanks Tom. Now I kind of remember those cars and the 221. I remember I didn't like either one of those cars. They weren't cool looking to me. I was 19 at the time. Ended up with a 1939 Ford. Loved that car. John

64 Ranchero with 302
 
Well I finally got to the Ranchero. Removed carb,intake manifold, Cylinder head covers, and removed all bolts holding the exhaust on. WOW! some of those are a son-of-a-gun. Now I realized that the exhaust pipes are in the way to remove the lower bolts holding the heads on. Figured piping should be loose but they are still very tight to heads. Guess I have to crawl underneath and see what else is holding the pipes so tight. Anyway after I solve that problem before I remove the heads do I need to loosen the lifter nuts and swing them to the side in order to remove rods to lifters??? Then can I remove heads? Any and all help will be appreciated. Thanks John:-wink

yes, loosen the lifters and, pull the pushrods.
make a box with holes in it so you can put the pushrods in it in the same way they are in the engine so you can put them back in the same place they cane out of.
some will say it does not matter where the pushrods go, i prefer to put them back to the same lifter/rocker they came out of

Hey! Tic Transport, Thankyou very much for that info. Great idea on putting the rods in order like that. I agree with you on replacing rods where they were removed. Makes good sense. John:-drink
