IMO the market is ripe for whomever introduces another genuinely compact pickup based on modern powertrains. By compact I mean 70's 80's compact and not modern compact that's about the size of an f150 from that era.
Get the base model pricing under 18k and 25+ mpg from the entry level powertrain and YOU WIN! Sadly that's not an unrealistic goal but there's too much profit in selling folks the truck the don't need vs the one they do. |

I'd give them a serious look if they would offer a diesel engine vehicle in the US... -blaine |

Not anymore. And it was identical to an F-150 except for few cosmetic changes. Was a waste IMO because F-150s had highly optioned and all fancy versions for people who want throw their money away on an expensive truck.
As for the Kia truck. It apparently crossed Kia's mind because they built a concept truck for the US market some years ago. PickupTruck.com - 2004 Chicago Auto Show: Kia KCV-4 Mojave Concept Truck They also make some utility pickups, no doubt for foreign markets. http://www.kiamotors.com/FileRootMai.../eng/K2700.pdf I would not expect any truck Kia introduces into the US market to be in the $14k-$17k. Maybe at the upper end of the range for a base price. Kia prices are up there with the rest these days. |
You've just succumbed to the marketing fiction that says a light truck must have 400 hp & 800 lb/ft of torque just to run empty or carry a couple cardboard boxes around town......}>

I worked at a Kia dealership and a friend of mine has become very loyal to Kia.
You can get a Rio for $12k or a Sorento for $30k or the new Cadenza for $30+k. Their cars used to be very plain-jane and unreliable. But they've gotten good styling and they've become much more reliable. If they were to come out with a truck, I would assume it would be built on the Sorento platform. It would probably be a small truck, with the option of a four cylinder or a six cylinder engine. |
I don't know about a KIA truck but I saw something I didn't know was made. A Suzuki pickup. It looked petty new, but have no idea what year or anything about it.
As for Kia I rented a Hyundai Elantra last week & what a sweet car. Comfortable, plenty of power, traction control worked perfect. Great gas mileage, great styling. We drove it a thousand miles or so. The guys I know with Kia's tell me the same story we had with the Hyundai. Craig |
The Suzuki Equator is a rebadged Nissan Frontier.
