For a quick general answer yes. We can drive our personal vehicles to the scene. What we try to do is if you pass the fire hall going to a call, you stop and drive or ride on the trucks to the scene if it is in our district. If it is a mutaul aid, we try to have everyone ride the trucks. Chiefs run red lights and sirens and everyone else can run a blue light only. No sirens.

Right now in my truck I still have my red grill lights and the speaker for the siren mounted. If I get back in as a chief, it would take me about 15 minutes to get the mobile radio and siren installed. I also left all of the wiring in place so that makes it real simple.

Chief, ambulance captain and fire police all can run blue lights. No sirens. Member are NOT suppose to run any lights or wig wags(head light flashers). Everything is legal until you get caught.}>}>

Guys, I assume that you run the '10' codes correct ?? (ie. 10-8 etc.) My county has 1-12 for the codes. I do not remember all of them because most of the time everyone uses plain english. The ones that are used are Code 4- Investigating, Code 5- Working Fire (really gets the adrenaline flowing), Code 9 - On Scene and Code 12- Possible DOA.

RDJ184 06-27-2008 10:40 PM

All plain language here. Just left the 10 code year and half ago. Any time we get swapped to a TAC channel at dispatch usually means working alarm.

Had a working double wide fire thursday morning at 3am. Got home at 6:30, feed horses, took a shower and worked 12 hours. In bed by 10.

I know what you mean. "Technically" right now my blue light is a tad bit illegal. We are suppose to run solid blue, whether it is the dome or filters. My light has a clear dome with blue filters, but my filters have a slot milled into them right at bulb level. Therefore I have a blue/clear combination that does give some additional 'pop' and draws attention. My red filters are the same way, but those are legal becasue as a chief, we can run a red/clear combo.

Do you want to know what is really fun to see..... Last year as chief I was responding to a call running lights and siren. Traffic was moving over for me and I was about 5 mph over the limit. (we can speed as long as it is done with 'due caution'). I ended up coming up behind a village police officer and he did not know what to do. He started to turn on his lights because he thought that he had a speeder, but when he saw my lights and heard the siren, he shut them down real fast and pulled over to the curb. When I went by I waved nicely at him. The look was priceless.

Have not been on that side of the fence Randy. The closest I can get is if I am instructing a class at a station and they have an alarm and let me ride. That is the only way I get paid to ride a truck.
