Forgot to mention if you do start the engine remove all of the towels you stuffed in the holes. You also shouldn't need to unplug the injector wires or the valve cover harness just use a needle nose plier and pull straight up on the glowplug boot. That will save some time for other things.

Because you know as soon as you put the covers back on you will want to know and wished you had. If you have a torque wrench this would be a good time to retorque your injectors(120in/lbs and rocker arms 240in/lbs) if you do check your injectors set the torque wrench for 50in/lbs and tighten the holddown if it tightens under 50in/lbs you may need a new set of injector o-rings. You could also start the engine after you are done installing the glowplugs and watch everything moving and not moving to see if there is anything out of the ordinary.

On the driver's side I have 3 "AD"s and the end one is an "AE" with a blue plug. I'm guessing it's been replaced?

I'm not in the pass side yet. I don't seem to have anything to tighten the rocker arms or the injectors. Their bolts are tiny! I tried a 5/32 or somesuch on the rockers but it slipped. Any idea the bolt sizes? I wouldn't know if anything was out of the ordinary by starting it. This is my first time wrenching on an engine :o

Good tip! I just figured out my ratchet can back the glowplugs all the way out and I can snag them with a magnet to pull them out. My hose stopped working, guess it stretched a bit.

The cylinder #'s on the driverside are 2 4 6 8. The AE is a long lead injector that Ford came up with to help with the elimination of the dreaded "cackle" that alot of 7.3 owners myself included experience. When you did the hutch mod it would have taken care of it by removing the air out of the fuel system the FRX return also helps by making a loop back to the fuel bowl. So your good there. As for the holddown bolt on the injector there is on bolt on top right of the oil deflector and one on the bottom. They should be an 8mm. Wish I had a pic maybe someone else can post one.

Oh, I was trying to torque the star bolts on the injectors. This thread pointed me in the right direction on the injector bolts. Gonna go run that try now.

Also, I'm going to do the .50 mod too. One of my plugs was loose. Neat tricK!

OMG please see here. I'm about to loose my poo

Put a zip tie on that upper radiator hose before the belt slices thru it. Strap it to the groove in the aluminum cover behind it.

And thanks for reading :)

So that happened. For anyone that didn't click the poo link above I was happily minding my own business, just torquin' on some bolts and enjoying the sunshine and then SNAP! One of my rocker arm bolts busted clean off inside the head!

http://i61.tinypic.com/2ptuky8.jpg

Long story short after panicking like a madman, kicking the dog, beating the wife, and possibly even crying a single tear (two of those things may not have happened lol) I stepped back, sipped some hard cider, and let the guys in that thread calm me down and explain to me first, that it wasn't the end of the world, and second how to fix my catastrophe. They were awesome :-X22

With my bolt ran back out like nature intended I bought 32 new rocker arm bolts and 8 new injector bolts from my local dealership. Here's the part numbers and receipt. Most places will pricematch so you'll get the same deal if you take this in when you go!

http://i60.tinypic.com/330qt8g.jpg

Now I'm waiting on those bolts to arrive and a new torque wrench from Craftsman that is rated smaller so it won't be the problem. That, and I need a day off from playing with Skippy after he just about gave me a heart attack.

EDIT: I returned all but the three I torqued. Apparently my torque wrench was locked up and torqued INFINITY pounds. So instead of 211.00 I was out a little over 20 bucks. :)

You lost me after sips of hard cider..

Sorry! Edited it for clarity. If it's the cider, well that's just supposed to happen. :-drink

SDElwood 03-23-2015 01:55 PM

Yeah, it was the cider... so dang tasty! On a side note, glad all is going well...

Glowplugger 03-23-2015 06:09 PM

I said I was done with Skippy for the day and taking a day off, but that didn't mean parts didn't still come in. It also didn't mean The Redhead didn't rip open boxes and do some work.

http://i58.tinypic.com/2mqpw68.jpg

We got a new cup holder in because the old one was a "cup thrower". It was too shallow and sent drinks flying around the cabin. Ask me how I know that! :-arrgh

We also got an antenna in. After waving it around like a sword, she took it out and installed it herself. It's the 32" version on Ebay and it came with the little black plastic bottom protector piece too. Nice!

http://i57.tinypic.com/145vrd.jpg

http://i60.tinypic.com/v4szra.jpg

Then she *tried* to put the cup holder in. To pull the old one out, there's two little nubs and one big tap that needs to be pushed down to pull it out.

http://i57.tinypic.com/14ujsk8.jpg

Then you just push it in.

http://i57.tinypic.com/21o5wm1.jpg

If you're lucky, it'll fit. If not, you'll have one square one from a 2002 model that SHOULD have been a direct fit, but wasn't. The 99 OEM version is on the right. See the countours?

http://i61.tinypic.com/2yv03dy.jpg

So what's a girl to do? (It's national Puppy day by the way!)

http://i60.tinypic.com/2816hvp.jpg

Glowplugger 03-23-2015 06:24 PM

Daddy to the rescue. I took the new one and looked at all the little tabs and such. If you pull the center insert out of the 2002 cupholder you'll see a tab in the bottom of it. I took a screwdriver and gently popped it up so that it pulled away slightly.

http://i57.tinypic.com/xqib2s.jpg

Then I took a screwdriver to the side tabs. I was careful but I broke one. It didn't matter though, I broke them both to get the new one on as part of the mod anyway.

http://i61.tinypic.com/15z4djq.jpg

Then you just flip the front face off. Those top tabs you're flipping off are important though, so if you do this be careful with those!

http://i59.tinypic.com/166kal5.jpg

That was it for the new face. The old one was riveted in so I drilled the heads off of that. It was soft metal, no big deal.

http://i62.tinypic.com/b6r8sy.jpg

Then I pried them over the leftover rivet with a screwdriver.

http://i62.tinypic.com/2rdcjex.jpg

With those out the old cup holder's face just falls off.

http://i57.tinypic.com/2njeuqh.jpg

Glowplugger 03-23-2015 06:36 PM

Then I just tossed the old cupholder body. The face wouldn't mash on directly so I took a pair of pliers and pried off the side tabs we talked about before, where the new face clipped in. Just the outside of the tabs though, not the whole thing!

http://i57.tinypic.com/282m1c1.jpg

Then the top part of the old face slipped right on the new cupholder and the bottom part would pinch at the bottom without hitting on the tabs. Now to affix them...

http://i57.tinypic.com/dnc9jk.jpg

http://i57.tinypic.com/2yxi1vl.jpg

Ok, then I pinched it together so that the top of the face was locked into place in the tabs. THIS IS IMPORTANT! If your top pieces aren't locked together like they're supposed to be forever you'll fail at this.

I pinched the bottom and drilled a small hole the same size as a computer hard drive screw, which I just happen to have a bunch of lying around.

http://i58.tinypic.com/2rcleog.jpg

And with a new screw in place it fit like a glove. The Redhead installed it while I was cleaning up so pic of it in the dash coming soon. But that's it! Now I have a new cup HOLDER and not a cup THROWER. :-jammin
