    I don't think you need to worry about the spacer ring. I'm not positive, but I don't think they were actually installed on stock engines and are more of an aftermarket thing to help line up the gears when you put new ones on. At the factory, they could press them on with precision, so they didn't need it. But when you're in a shop or backyard garage, you usually don't have that kind of precision available, so the spacer is helpful in getting it lined up just right. I've heard from a few guys who planned on just reusing the old spacer when they pulled their gears off, only to find there wasn't one. There shouldn't be anything to worry about.
