Hello, this is my first post on here. Just needing some guidance on an issue that’s been haunting me for a few weeks. My 460 is having an issue that’s similar to the symptoms of a bad distributor (starts, dies and runs longer when cold.) but the only variable that’s got me chasing my tail is relay 2 is chattering which is causing the solenoid in the transmission, and the fuel pump to do the same along with a popping noise coming from the distributor cap. I thought it was the PCM itself when I found blown caps on it, but I replaced them and same issue persists. I’ve tried the relay itself and some other small components. Any advice is greatly appreciated, thank you!

It seems that the crankshaft sticks out a little bit more than the extra weight, harmonic balancer, and pulley. Maybe a 1/4 inch. When I took it apart after the 4 bolts for the pulley was taken off the pulley just fell off. And I took the crank bolt out to replace a timing chain, and timing chain cover gaskets, and harmonic balancer. The old balancer is exactly the same size etc. So the washer and bolt I assume never held the balancer on. Basically was just pressed in. Is that hiw it's supposed to be or did someone not put something back on before I bought the truck 25 years ago? I'd like to thank anyone that can enlighten me on the subject in advance.

To answer the first question....why not just get the correct gaskets? Evidently I was in the wrong search part of Rock Auto and inadvertently??? were searching in 1995 instead of 1985. Since I'd broken the seal on the box those gaskets are mine:(.

After I opened the box it was evident that something was wrong because the valve cover gaskets were not correct:(. Checking part numbers on head gaskets seemed to point to "no fit" either.

Have you had any experience before I purchase more gaskets?

Thanks

So, while needing to replace the water pump on my 1987 F-250 with the 460 engine. I think it is a good idea to also reseal the timing chain cover as well. But while already that deep in, I would like to finally fix the rear main seal leak it's had for years, since you already have the oil pan open on the front. might as well drop the whole pan, right? The thing is, all modern BMWs I have worked with have a one-piece seal, and you don't have to remove the rear main either. So I am trying to find others who have the knowledge about this kind of job. It seems people replace a bearing while doing so. Also, there seems to be a crush depth with the seals themselves, as well as an offset alignment. Any information about this procedure would be helpful. I know I would need to check the clearance of the new bearing as well. Also, I did post this in the brick nose section, but just realized there is a big block section as well.

Hello all, I have been reading a LOT of the posts and answers from this forum and find myself a little bewildered... It has been a few years since my last "mod" engine build, but I have done some stock rebuilds more recently in life, and I do not remember it being such a "marvel" to spec out parts for a build that will result in deliberate outcomes. I am sure a lot of you will roll your eyes at my question(s) because there appears to be dozens of similar posts and questions from the past but after reading tons of them, I am more confused than when I started researching... "Side Note" - Then you throw in the responses from "some" that are clearly jokes or deliberate attempts to lead in the wrong direction, which does not help... All that said, here is where I am at:
I have a stock and original '92 F350 460 EFI... That is embarrassing to drive because of the 180hp(or something silly like that), that it has.. I'm looking for the shortest path to 400-450hp and still a daily driver that can tow but that is not the "purpose" of the vehicle, as it has a lift and large tires. I have a decent shop and decent capabilities, but like most, not a ton of cash to throw at it. Obviously, the way to go would be to send it to a machine shop, tell them what I'm after, and walla! There goes several thousand dollars. Even if I had the money, I would not do that, and would still want to build it myself.
Q1 - So, a '92 460 EFI has -7cc pistons w/ 1.76" comp height and 10.3" deck heights, that sit approx .030 - .040 in the hole.. Is this correct?
Q2 - I have old 460 pistons that have the oval dish w/ 2 valve reliefs and a dish depth of 5/32 or .156"... Are these a -22cc? I think the -22cc pistons are .230" dish... Please advise
3 - I have an old pair of the DOVE-C heads.. Unknown condition and will most likely have them decked.
Q3.1 - If the Dove-C heads were to be used, I realize the OE piston is going to cause high CR, but that exact number seems to be everywhere... Assuming worst case scenario of a 11.5cr, could a guy just get away with a larger cam and supplementing with VP fuel?
Q3.2 - Using the previous setup, I saw a few comments, but never any actual details, about water-methanol injection and E85... I know nothing about these so could someone give me some solid advice and info about this??
Q3.3 - Occasionally I will see a comment about distributors and "starting at 15 degree advance and running at 38 degree advance".. I do not remember this being such a big thing in my past builds, can someone please explain fully??
Q3.4 - In my past experiences with "high-compression" builds... which is limited, I thought the "golden number" was 11:1cr.. Why is a 460 supposedly only safe at 9.5cr before the pinging???
Q3.4 - In the posts and comments I saw it said a lot that "it being tuned perfectly" is crucial.. Am I correct that this is speaking to the timing and AF/r and such?? Or is there more I am missing??
Q3.5 - "Quench?? I keep hearing this word a lot and do not really understand.. Isn't the quench based of head gasket thickness/quality and proper torque specs??
Q3.6 - I heard a couple people say something about "grooving something towards the spark plug", and they made it sound important. What is this about?

After reading these posts and comments for weeks now, it is clear there are some very knowledgeable people here and I look forward to hearing your thoughts and advice on this. I'm sure I left some detail out so I apologize now for that, I am eager to get this post out there and the responses coming in! Thanks!
