So, as some may know, I actually have two trucks I'm working on in a race to get at least one working as I am currently without a working truck. I initially thought that the '66 F250 was the more likely one to get working, so I stopped my efforts on the '65 F100 I'd been dealing with the past year. Mission creep set in and the '66 F250 workload expanded and I'm off to the electroplaters and powder coater to refresh the parts I will be reinstalling.

I spent today working on the '65 F100 for the first time in a couple months. The rationale was that I could use the '66 F250 as a guide on which nuts and bolts to use for the reassembly. I had stripped the '65 cab down to the bones. This is required to replace the firewall insulation.

I bought the ABS version from Dennis Carpenter. It is not original, but I feel it will be more durable than the original type.
Lessons learned (over the course of this day) hopefully to spare others from wasting time figuring it out.
1. Hopefully you retained the original insulation cover as a template. Use it to identify which cutouts are necessary. There are several cutout on the ABS panel to account for various configurations.
2. Allow about 20 minutes with an xacto knife to clean up the openings as needed.
3. Unless you have unobstructed access to punch the original metal plugs through the firewall from the engine bay, they will likely break if you try to pry them out with a claw hammer. Buy some new ones. I decided to purchase metal ones from DC which are pricey but the plastic ones at the auto store weren't that much cheaper when only sold in pairs for $5-6/package. If you buy the DC firewall insulation, you've already committed to spending money.
4. Test fit for good measure to ensure all the openings line up as expected. Do not attach at this time. Then set aside.
5. Install the steering column metal bracket with rubber gasket from the inside. It should be clear that the steering column has been refurbished prior to this and the steering shaft should not be installed withing the column during this initial sequence.
6. Install your newly refurbished pedal assembly; the one with the new plastic bushings and new paint that's been lying around for months waiting for the big reveal. Yes, that one. Your instrument cluster has been removed a long time ago and it's waiting for its big day too, but not today.
7. The pedal assembly can be slid into position and will hold itself in place so that you can install the bolts from the engine side into the firewall to secure the pedal assembly. I've left these bolts slightly loose as I figure out my brake system upgrade and will likely need to install a bracket using these bolts; so I'm on hold for now.
8. From the inside, install the two bolts with washers and locknut to attach the rearward end of the pedal assembly to the dash. The instrument panel is out and allows this with ease.
9. I called it a day at this point but tomorrow I start by placing the ABS firewall insulation up against the wall, then slip the steering column through the opening; do not bolt it in place yet. At this time lay the column flat so that you can slide the steering rod, from the outside into the steering column. I set the retainer clamp approximately 3.25 inches from the forward flange of the steering rod, as I found in my other truck, for reference. I needed to do this as I have the steering box in place so I needed the clearance by keeping the steering column horizontal while doing this.

I'm looking to replace the shot single piston wheel cylinders on my 63 with dual piston cylinders. Is this a simple drop-in conversion? If so, what wheel cylinders should I get? I'm already completely redoing the brakes since it hasn't moved in 40 years and do not have the funds to convert to front discs. I'm just trying to get it back on the road with working brakes.

Thanks in advance

I did, however, find a diagram that matched my switch but it’s for 70-76 trucks. So it seems I have a later ignition switch. Can anyone confirm from the pics that that’s what it is?

I did figure out which pin is the accessory pin. Would that be the correct pin to get power (not the tach signal) to the tach? I have the battery disconnected while I work on wiring so I can’t probe the wires at all.

Hey everyone,

I’m looking for some help with my drum/drum brakes on my ’65 F100. I recently installed a dual‑reservoir master cylinder with an 8" vacuum booster from Master Power Brakes (MPB). After converting from a manual single pot, the brakes are extremely touchy. During low-speed testing (3–5 mph), the truck stays straight, but moderate pedal pressure causes the rear drums to lock first with a chirp, while the front-end nose dives. Between test runs I verified and adjusted the pushrod clearance to with-in the MPB's recommended range, but this did not fix my issue. The brakes behave the same before and after adjusting the pushrod distance.

Since this is my first time working on drum brakes, I’m not sure if I’m dealing with a booster mismatch, shoe adjustment issue, or something else entirely. If anyone has experience with drum/drum setups using a modern booster and dual master, I’d appreciate any advice, things to check, or common issues to consider.

- Thanks

Hello all!

I would love to get a project truck that I can work on with my kids. I am brand new to working on / restoring trucks, so Iv really just been looking at different styles and years that I like. That being said, I have found a truck that’s already complete that I think I want to use as a goal. The problem is that it looks like the bed is from a 1957-60 style body and the cab is from ‘66 F250 crew cab. This leads me to having couple questions.

1. Is it best practice / less fabrication to use a bed from the some size series of truck? For example, I want the chassis and the cab to be from an F250 at-least. Should I then try to find a bed from an F250 or can I use one from a F150?

2. If the chassis originally had a crew cab short bed, can I swap it for a regular size bed (go from shorter bed to longer bed) or vise versa from a crew cab long bed to short bed? Or would this entail heavily modifying the chassis/wheelbase?

3. Long story short, I love the truck in the picture that I included and want to build something similar. What is your best guess as to what truck that bed came off of and what kind of fabrication they had to do to make it work?

4. Short of being rich and having the money to buy it out right, what is the best way to go about starting out on my project truck adventure that will set me up for building this truck?

Thanks for taking time out of your day to help an newbie. All advice is welcome.

My son has a 66 F100 with a 302 and C6 and we are trying to figure out the correct front spring to install. The ones there now - not sure they are even original - are incorrect as the camber is way off and wearing the tires badly on the outside. We got a new pair for a 72 F100 thinking that with the 302 available in that year may get us going in the right direction. They make the camber even worse. We could cut coils and go trail and error but would rather start with something closer to correct. We came across an older post that showed original part numbers for the 66 with different engine configurations (There were three different load rates available: 1055 lbs (I-6's only) * / 1175 lbs. (I-6 or V8) / 1250 lbs. (V8 only).) Clearly the one for the 352 V8 would be too stiff given the weight of that motor compared with the 302. We know these original springs are no longer available, but maybe we could custom order some with the correct spring rate. Would maybe 1055 or 1175 be correct for a 302? Anybody kbow what the correct spring rate and size would be for our setup? Thanks

I'm working on rewiring my 1966 F250. It didn't come with a wiper switch or working wipers. I found a working single speed wiper motor on Craigslist. I'd like to wire it to a relay if possible. But, even if I have to directly use the 2 speed switch that I got, I'd still need to know which pin on the motor is power, run and park to wire it. What are the motor pin connections? I have the original cable. The blue is closest to the gear box. The black is in the middle and the red / black stripe is farthest from the gears. Which wire is which or pin outs? It has the 4 wire plug on the other end.
Any ideas on using the relay?
What I'm thinking to do is to use a 5 pin relay. Connect the Run to the center contact 30 and Power which also runs to the motor directly to 87 NO and Park to 87a NC on the relay. This. should connect Power to Run when the relay is activated to make the wipers run. When it's switched off. Run will connect to Park and disconnect from Power. That seems to be the way that many of the switches are wired, but no one seems to know anything about single speed wiring. Will this work?

Got scammed in classifieds, and I’m the guy that never gets scammed. Beware putting a wanted ad here

I’ve been a member here for 12 years. I am also a member on several other forums, as well as some Facebook car groups.

I do buy and sell things on marketplace, as well as Craigslist. I’m the guy who almost never sends money electronically. My motto is cash in hand in person only.

A few months ago, I put a wanted ad for a 61 through 66 bench seat cover in our classifieds. This supposed member sent me a pm telling me that another member here had what I was looking for.

I contact that person who seemed extremely legitimate. I always have my spider senses up dealing with money. Maybe I missed it, but I’ve never seen any warnings here about classified scams.

Not blaming this site at all, it’s all on me. Just wanted to share this with you all. I did contact the person who had the seat cover directly at their email, which was not smart. I’m hoping that the administrators of this site can let all the different sub forms know about this.

I paid with Zelle. The scammer also asked for my phone number. He said the bank needed it. I thought that was a little bit strange, but I was hooked in by then.

I guess scammers try to use your phone number to change your phone number and access your bank texts. Already took the steps to fix that.

Lesson learned. I dropped my guard down and got nailed and that’s very hard to do with me. The email I’ve been sending to is something like dieselgarage@outlook.com.

That really doesn’t matter. Just wanna let you guys know— be very cautious. The person that scammed me is a member here, but it only has four posts through the years, probably to make him seem legitimate.

But I’m sure that the scammers just use that person’s handle.

Fool me once…….. and the funny thing is I’m always protecting my mom from scammers and talking to her about it. She gets about 10 phone calls a day telling her she won the lottery.

Other than that, it’s a great day.

oh, one more thing. If someone knows how to contact the administrators here so they can pass this to other sub forms, please let me know. I’ve been looking and I can’t find any way to do this.
