Swapping out one 352 for another in better shape. The flywheel ring gear on the good motor is worn about 1/3 of the way across the teeth but was still working OK. Any reason why the ring gear cannot be removed and flopped around so that the other side of the teeth can be used? Hate to be so cheap but we are in a recession. Steve
Find removing tranny, and/or, engine so painful that I replace everything associated with either in an effort to put off the next installation, I would likely put out the additional $30 and replace w/ new. Having said that, know of it being done, just as long as the ring gear is not too torn up. Suggest check starter and ring gear alignment, on occasion, did not put equal torque on the bolts and consequently some slight grinding.
It would cost more, but there are probably mini hi torque starters available for the 352. Then you wouldnt have to do anything to your gear, because the aftermarket starter engages from the front, where the teeth are good. Handling them during installation and removal sure is nice compared to the heavy originals. I've been using one the last 3 or 4 years.
Reversing the worn ring gear is supposed to be an OK idea. Havent ever done it, only performed an installation, so experienced others may tell how to get it off. To put it on I placed the gear in an oven at 450 degrees for say an hour, and it tapped into place fairly easily.
i know this is an old thread but do you by chance remember how many teeth ur ring gear had for the flywheel ? the new had 184 and the one i took off had 153. im told thats a chevy ring gear. I have a 65 F100. 4 spd with a 352. im not positive what tranny it is but the bell housing says FoMoCo for ford motor company. my starter had perfect mesh with the 153 tooth ring gear so is it possible the start and ring gear are from a chebby ? i guess what im looking for is, Has a 153T ring ever came stock on the 352 ?

im told thats a chevy ring gear. Whoever told you that nonsense hasn't a clue, it's not a Chebbie ring gear. The flywheel and 153 tooth ring gear are from a 1958/64 Passenger Car w/an FE engine.

I typed additional info into your other thread on this subject, but I just thought of something. It's possible the entire engine has been swapped, taken from a 1958/64 car and a coupla ways to tell are:
1958/64 FE engines have rounded valve covers with no provisions for oil caps or the smog valve. There is an oil fill tube on the right (passenger) side-front of the engine.
The 1968/64 blocks have different engine mounts/support brackets and a different number of mounting holes. In order to use a 1958/64 engine in a 1965 and later vehicle, special brackets have to be made up.

All 1965/76 FE flywheels have a 184T ring gear.
Are you saying if i do havea 1958/64 block i will have my oil fill tube on the passenger side of the engine ? I have my oil fill on the driver side.
