My Fathers '99 Ranger just dropped the number 6 cylinder and I need help finding what vehicles and years used the same engine for a replacement. The VIN has an X in the 8th locale. The coil pack is on the back right side of the engine compartment. The intake box is on the front right of the vehicle. I am not sure of whether it is a SOHC or an OHV engine. The intake plenum is not inscribed with either, all it says is 4.0 EFI. Here is a link to a picture of the exact engine I need found from searching the net - Imageshack - rangerengine.jpg
Any assistance is greatly appreciated
Thank you,
David
that is a OHV, it can be found in ford explorers and rangers for many many years. explorers up untill 2001 and i'm not sure when they stopped using it in the ranger maybe the same year?.
Right on, Thanks for determining the OHV. Do you know if these were used in Explorers or Mazda B's at all. I have been told that possibly even Aerostars(though I am not too crazy about removing an engine from a van)?
Thanks again!
Stretchstick, the 4.0 pushrod engine like yours was available in the Ranger from 90 thru 2000. Although your particular series ran from 98 to 2000 in the Ranger and Mazda B4000. The Explorer used them as well from the early 90's thru mid 97 when the OHC started to be an option. The Aerostar also used them from 90 to 97. There could be some small differences in the lay out of the Explorer engine intake hose or filter location compared to how it is on your Ranger. It would be like that on the other older donors as well. But you should be able to change that pretty easily with your Ranger parts to make it match your Ranger engine bay. With some of the older Rangers, Explorers, Mazda truck or Aerostar, it may not be so easy to determine their exact mileage due to the limits of the odometers not counting as high as the one you have. Just something else to keep in mind when looking.
the explorer used it, in the same configuration as you have from 96 to 2001.
the newer the better in terms of the heads being better 95-up also some of the sensors/connectors were different untill 96..from there and up they should be the same.
