hey there just wondering about exhaust. on my truck i have the 4.6 motor. i seen a truck that has the same motor that ran strait pipe after the cats. was wondering what kinda gains or waste it was.i know you can loose power if you dont have some back pressure but would that be only for towing? lower torqe? i was thinking of just adding the glass pack type muffler to my truck just because i dont have the funds for a new muffler and tiered of the chocked out stock
Save up,and get the right one put on.....Probably will be cheaper in the long run.I know of no real performance gains...most folks go to glass packs/Cherry bombs etc to get that "Throaty" exhaust sound.
I have a 98 f150 with the 4.6L. I recently installed the cherrybomb turbo muffler on my truck and it really gave it a nice throaty sound on accelleration but quiets done once you reach cruising speed. I also have installed the fipk 2 kit from K&N. The combination seems to have helped on towing and fuel mileage.15mpg to about 17-20mpg depending on driving conditions. hope this helps
Please... There are so many better choices than glasspacks. They are loud, obnoxious, and just annoy most everyone around you. A good stock configuration turbo muffler is probably about the same price as a glasspack, and probably cheaper if you don't need to fab new tailpipes.
If all you want is a muffler, we carry the WickedFlow brand. Sounds great on the 5.4L. Plus it is all stainless and lifetime guaranteed. Glasspacks seem to burn out every couple years, depending on how you drive and where you live. A good straight through muffler will also flow better than the packs you are looking at.
im looking for something a little loud. so the wicked flow is an 18" muffler what about the super 44? between those 2 what would you get?what size pipe shoud i go for? is 3" single to big? i will be checking back on this before i buy thanks for the info so far guys.
Depending how loud you want it... I went to Midas to have my pipes put on and the offer a flowmaster with their setup, it's a nice sounding muffler, but I'm one of those guys that likes the sound of his own voice so i opted for a Y pipe instead, remember you can change the tone by how large your pipes are too, after the Y mine goes to dual 3" pipes out back giving it a more mellow tone...
i put a cherry bomb extreme muffler on a 4.6 and i have to say, the sound it makes turns heads. it was only about 50 bucks from jegs but i did gain a little power, not much but some i better than none.
i had a hemi with flowmaster super 44, it sounded good but the ford 4.6 does not have near the power so i say a flowmaster or magnaflow is just to big. if you want some sound clips, just go to youtube a there are lots of them, from strait pipes to full custom setups.
If you want more sound, smaller bodied mufflers are better. The larger the casing,t he more sound it absorbs and the more mellow the tone. Thats what makes glasspacks loud, they have a minimum body size.
