I want to change my pick-up air intake. Have been going for the Volant cool air intake with the closed box system.
Does anyone have any experience with this or any other system.
Also where can I get the best price.
Thanks,
Ron

i have the k&n filter with the stock piping. i dont see how the cold air intakes say they work better.i think they take the air from the same place as the stock air they just have a better filter than stock.that my opinion anyways.
i thought a cold air intake would be cool, it sounded cool, did nothing for horse power or gas mileage. They really shouldn't be called a cold air intake more like a hot air intake. Im using a scan gauge and when i had my CAI on i there was at least a 50 degree temp difference in the intake air temp reading verses the factory setup. my suggestion is a gotts intake mod.
--modified intakes are for looks only.
--if you install a different unit, try to get the air from inside the fender well, not the hot air out of the radiator, under the hood.
--the stock air filter is a higher qualilfy filter than the aftermarket units.
--the stock air filter can pass enough air for the engine to rev up to 5000 RPM. You are only turning 1800 rmp at 65 MPH down the highway, so you dont need "more air"
--for the above reasons, aftermarket filters do not add horsepower or mileage gains.
I need some one that has installed such a unit. It seems to me the answers I get are people that have not attempted to install a professional air intake system. Look under your hood..........what was Ford thinking when they built the air system???
If someone has installed such a system............write a blog.............I will read it and I will listen
iF YOUR JUST BLOWING SMOKE............WRONG PERSON.
I have the Air Force 1 kit, no noticeable gains in power or mileage but it has more than paid for itself with me not buying $20 air filters a couple times a year. I also have a cowl induction hood that dumps directly on top of the filter, on top of that my temp sensor for my rear view mirror is mounted on the hole that is where the stock silencer used to be and it is very accurate unless I start idling for many minutes then it starts to creep up from the under hood heat. Before I got the AF1 I cut the filter housing off from the clamp to the fender and used a K&N filter, no noticeable gains there either but again saved money after 2-3 filter change intervals.

Don't know how much more of a blog you want. i got a K and N CAI wasted 200 hard earned dollars! sucked dust and sh** into the intake....... no gains in horsepower or mileage! And yes the filter was properly oiled and cleaned...... when you drive in plowed fields and pastures and dirt roads they don;t work worth a damn.
I had an Outlaw Power CAI on my 01, but I think they went out of business. It had a larger area filter and was a closed unit with a much larger intake hole where it met with the inner fenderwell. You won't see much of a gain in anything but intake moan, so I would just look into removing the funnel at the end of the air filter housing where it connects to the inner fenderwell and add something larger like a piece of PCV painted black.
lucky, if your looking for someone to tell you to spend $200 and get one, that it will work great and get better mileage and more HP, forget it. You can read a blog where someone claims the moon is made of green cheese if you want. Truth is the air intake is for looks only. No performance gains.

The trick here during our hot 110 -117 days is to get air...........
I look at the small hole in the fender well where the air comes in and it's small.............also there are so many bends in the plastic manafold that gets the air into the engine..............is there a system that will help to get the air to the engine better without going to the $245 setup.
We have a lot of dust & dirt in Phoenix and changin the stock filter gets to be a $200 dolloar a year pain.............I change the stock filter every 45 days

well i tell ya what here in ks we get to i think it was 108 one day here in SW ks. On my scan gauge the intake air temp read 150 degrees F. I then decided that this damn thing was defeating the purpose of "cold air" so i put my stock system back on and did the gots mod. Now my intake air temp reads 10-15 degrees higher than the out side air temp. Search the gotts mod on google or even this site. and see what you think. you could still do this mod and use a k and n filter. Its not my money your spending if you want to buy one i would say get a k and N intake. they are probly just as good as any of em.

I live in rural AZ and you must be having someone throw dirt at you as you drive. I change my filter every 6 to 10,000 miles and it is not filthy when I change it but it needs it. I don't understand why you need more air. I have driven my truck in this heat when my truck thermometer read 120 and I had zero issues other than the A/C having a hard time to keep up. Who told you that you need more air? Whomever did was blowing the air up your a**. I cannot believe you change your filter that often unless you driving through plowed fields, seriously!
I have always lived by the motto, if it is so great why didn't Ford already install it.

If your so good and you can get 10,000 per air change - good for you......not in my neighborhood.
Aren't the CAI gains noticeable at redline where the engine spends little time at if at all? I agree with just for looks opinion. I recently just did the Gott's intake mod and removed the silencer elbow from my intake.
I was looking into CAI but I thought to save my money. Not the same application but on my brother's 04' or 06' GTO with a 5.7L LS1 he had a K&N CAI and he had the motor idling one day and I couldn't put my hand on his intake because it was too hot. How is something suppose to cool the air when the piping used is conducting heat.
Do the air box to fender mod that I mentioned and replace the pipe from the TB to the filter box with PCV pipe. This will eliminate the resonator and gain you the moaning sound. Won't effect performance or mileage any, but will sound better.
And yes, the minute HP gains from a CAI are maybe 10hp @ 5500rpm. Nothing usable in a heavy truck. If you add a supercharger, then it is another story
