I have the opportunity to buy a 98 4x4 w/188k on the ticker. I'm just looking for something to haul lumber around...and the guy will take $1500 for this thing.
Here is the problem: it has a really loud knocking type noise when you jump on the pedal or put it under load. At idle it's perfectly quiet, and it is perfectly quiet once the RPM's are up. It just makes the "knocking" noise as you are quickly hitting/tapping the accelerator.
Could this be manifold leak?
could be a manifold leak. could be a spark plug about to blow out maybe. lash adjusters (so i've heard from my experience trying to diagnose my ticking sound). someone else will chime in but i think an exhaust leak will get louder as the r's climb. a spark plug about to blow out will have a drastic increase in ticking sound but won't get louder.
could be a piston slap or just the injectors are just that old (it's normal for them to tick a bit) someone else will reply but this will get the ball rolling.
Mine has the manifold leak that ticks like crazy on acceleration. After the engine warms up, the noise goes away. I suppose it expands when it gets hot and gets tighter. I know it's the manifold because I crawled under it last winter when it was cold out, and I could see the exhaust coming out the driver's side manifold. I not ready to take on that project though! not much room in there.
Turned out to be a broken stud at the rear of the manifold on passengers side. The stud was simply held in by RUST...it was the lower stud nearest the exhaust port. New manifold and studs...and all is good now.
If only I could figure out why the damn temp gauge is pegged to the max at all times@!!@
