1946 Ford/Marmon-Herrington designation

Somebody knows, how were designated 1946 Ford trucks all-wheel-drive conversion of Marmon-Herrington? I know, that of 1945 Ford truck conversions were designated as Marmon-Herrington CMM Series, 1947 - as CM Series.

welcome to the club. nice to see more mh,s coming out of the woodwork. you don't give enough info on what you're looking for. how big or small a truck? a very good source of mh info is- chucks trucks in conneticut. very knowledgable on all aspects of mh! if you have one, set up your gallery, put in some pics. love to see em!

I'll add my welcome. Glad to have another M-H owner join us. I see you are in Russia. Was your truck a military vehicle or a post war civilian export? The M-H model number would have been stamped on a plate mounted over the windscreen. I know that they are sometimes missing, though. We'd love to see pictures when you can. Stu

I am interested in history of Marmon-Herrington Сompany. I have an information about 1935-1963 trucks, but only do not know a designation of 1,5-ton 1946 Ford conversion.
I know two cases of delivery of Marmon-Herrington trucks in the USSR:
1. In 1938 the USSR has received Marmon-Herrington С30-6 6-8 ton Dump Truck (6х6).
1. In 1942 the USSR has received 500 Marmon-Herrington HH6COE-4 trucks of 1940 modelling years Red Army.

To my understanding the 1.5 ton Ford Marmon-Herrington model numbers varied depending upon the truck's wheel base and cab type, that is whether a COE (cab over engine) or standard cab. I've been through my resources looking for 1946 model numbers and have had no luck. Here are two web sites that might be of help. One is the Military Vehicle Preservation Association and the other is the Marmon-Herrington Yahoo Group. The Yahoo group to my understanding has interest in military vehicles. Marmon-herrington mercury

(THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A NEW THREAD...I'LL TRY TO RE-POST)

I just noticed this part of FTE, and was glad to see some interest in MH stuff.
I was lucky enough to get this '46 Merc about 19 years ago; it was built for a wealthy ornithologist/photographer, so it was never thrashed like most work trucks. He had it "camperized" by Coachcraft Ltd. with the roof rack, built-in ice box & water tank, cot stored inside the roof, aux. fuel tank, and a bunch of other state-of-the-art (for 60 years ago!) stuff. It's still got the original birch framing (new mahogany panels), and all the M-H components, as well as the ton-and-a-half non-synchro 4-speed. At the risk of pissing-off most of you, I have to disclose that the old tired flathead was replaced with a Corvette small-block back in 1961...SORRY!...but at least it was cleanly done by Tom Sparks, a well-known lakes & drag racer who had a shop near Coachcraft in Hollywood. Also luckily, I met the original owner's wife about 10 years ago - that's her on the fender in '47, before it was camperized.

My Uncle Kurt Grayson A lifelong actor in Hollywood and car collector as long as I can recall, owned this woody in the 70's from 74-82? I know of as My Dad had it in Sacramento in our garage for that duration.
I saw the Ornithologist details and stainless camping etc and the 283 vette motor was a screamer! I wonder where that 283 vette motor is now, I just learned it was done by Tom Sparks! My Uncle had many great cars He knew this one was special and without him I doubt this woody would still be existing, Kurt loved Chrysler T&C convertibles and restored several from hulks! This wody was never tore up just the roof leather and paint was old, but it drove Sac to LA many times!

I envy those who have such a long and complete history of their car or truck. Especially when the vehicle is as special as your uncle's Merc MH woodie. Knowing that this one is real makes all the difference in a modern world where guys mix together bits of old wrecks to create the next high dollar copy. Stu

Hi Biff - I'm Dave - the guy that now owns your uncle's wagon. I got it in 1990 from the guy who bought it from Kurt; his business was buying/restoring/selling Ford & Mercury woodies. He had done some work on a '42 Ford I had, and called me when he got the Merc; he had to sell it due to "problems" with Vegas - I had previously seen Kurt's ad to sell it in the Woodie Club magazine, so I knew about the car. When I saw it I knew I had to have it! I actually talked to Kurt after I got it, and heard all about the 'vette motor. A Corvette restorer friend of mine identified it as a '57 dual-quad, dual-point solid lifter 283, but it had an incorrect single 4-bbl manifold & carb on it, and really wasn't running that well. Anyway, because of that and my lack of knowledge about solid lifters and dual point set-ups, I traded it to the 'vette guy for a rebuilt 350 which we outfitted to look like an old Corvette motor. I later met Tom Sparks, who remembered doing the original motor swap. I was also lucky enough to meet Don Bleitz's (the ornithologist) family, his ex-wife, and Bill Stoessel, whose dad ran Coachcraft, where it was camperized - great stories. Above all, I consider myself very lucky to have the car!

I also learned by checking the VIN against Lorin Sorensen's Famous Ford Woodies that it's not a '46, but an early (Feb.) '47. It's one of the left-over '46s that was numbered and sold in '47; the slightly re-designed '47s came out that spring. That explains why the earliest photos I have of it show a yellow plate on the front bumper. I had it registered as a '46 for almost twenty years - I could've let it be but I wanted to make it as correct as possible.
Anyway, I've had a blast with the car, and hope to keep it up for a long time to come!
