Can I disconnect the front drive shaft?

I have a '03 expy eb I have been hearing some weird noises coming from the front end. After reading some other forums I think I may have found something that is the answer to my question. Anyway It has awd 4hi and 4low and of course 2hi I dont need 4wd anymore so I was wondering if it would mess anything up if I just disconnect the front drive shaft. Also do you think that might improve my mpg's? Thanks for any help.

Try it. Do some low-traction actions that would trigger the automatic 4x4. If there isn't any drama or trauma, you're probably good. As for mpg, if your hubs have been releasing and not spinning the front axle, you will have no increase. If it has been spinning, it will continue to do so until you fix that.

Gearing, if different than 4x2 would cause the biggest 4x4 mpg penalty, followed by weight, then friction.

I removed mine (99 awd) and drove that way about 6 months. Replaced it after I solved the bindding problem (mix match tires).
