Ever Heard of this?

In the summer when I run my A/C my truck looses power and seems to go into a survival mode(I picked that term up somewhere in my books). It's a 92 Flareside 4X4 with a 4.9 and a 5 spd manual. Any ideas? I have a code reader but not sure if the codes are right. Never done this before. I tried to count the blinking "CHECK ENGINE" light. I'm not even sure they told me how to hook up the code reader right.

Well when the AC compressor engages, it places a higher load on the motor so naturally you are supposed to lose some power. How much of a difference are we talking here? When's the last time you gave it a tune up?

you realize all the chain auto parts stores have actual code readers, and will scan your ecu for free, right? why bother with the ghetto-fabulous paperclip method?

if the ecu runs in open loop when you turn the ac on its probably throwing a code. "open loop", by the way, is the actual term. not survival mode.

go get it scanned and go from there

The loss of power is significant. When I say "goes into survival mode", I mean if you are close to home you can limp back home. This is a major drop in power. I haven't had more than 500 miles on a tune-up. The check engine light does come on when it happens. The truck runs fine otherwise.

Yeah I know the stores will scan it but I wanted the experience and am a hands on kind of guy. Just never had a need for a scan before. I bought a plug unit from NAPA I think for around $60 and I am not sure it is sending the same codes everytime. I ran it 3 times and got different results all 3 times. I guess I'll see what the store gets for codes and compare.

i completely understand. Im the same way. If i cant build it or make it, ill buy it lol.

I just think you should go with the reputable scanner. Its not a dash against your pride! and then youre not solving problems that dont exist and potentially hurting the state of tune of your truck for no reason!
