MAF on a 2000 Excursion V10

I hope this isn't a dumb question but...is a 2000 Excursion V10 a Mass Air system, and if so, where is the sensor??

I just pulled the new unit in the garage to service it and thought I'd clean the mass air sensor but I don't see one. Should be somewhere between the air filter and the throttle plate right?

It's in the air box, the back half. Probably the easiest thing to do is use "MAF cleaner" and just spray straight through the box. Otherwise, you have to pull the inside section of the air box out of the outer, making sure you snake the wires through the hole...

I'd remove the entire air box, and then use the spray. Make sure, when you put it back together, that the rubber plug where the wires go through is fully seated. Mine came out somehow and caused it to run lean - enough to feel it (and hear, through the headers).

Aha! I knew it had to be there somewhere! Thanks. I picked up a can of MAF sensor cleaner (they're proud of that stuff $$) when I bought the oil and filter.

I'll go back out and look again.

They're proud of that stuff because for years, it was "Contaminated MAF? Gotta replace the sensor = big $'s"

Now, spray it, and the car comes alive. I've been doing that for years with family/friend's cars - clean the MAF and it's like I put a new motor in it...

Big difference

I'm sure it does!

Funny thing, I get black gunk on the MAF of all my vehicles even when I use a stock paper filter.

It's time to do it again, actually... time to get out there

I've noticed it also on vehicles with paper filters the MAF prongs and air temp thermocouple get black dirt built up on them. I honestly don't like paper filters. I've been checking my intake tube from time to time for dirt build-up and its been clean so far.

MAF cleaner is basically just Electrical Contact cleaner. Good electrical contact cleaner will cost about the same as the MAF cleaner.

There are the electronics cleaners that have the brush right on the end can you use that on a MAF, or is it to fragile to touch with one of those brushes?

Interesting thread so I have to ask. Should I be cleaning the sensor on my 03 V10 with 30K on it. I've always used paper filters(just installed a motorcraft). If yes would anyone know the procedure for an E-Series. If not I'll ask over at that forum. Thanks

You can touch the wire without it breaking but I don't use a q-tip or anything to clean the wires. Blasting the wires several times with the MAF cleaner gets them clean enough.

Should be in the air box, the side that goes to the throttle body. If I remember correctly, the E-series has the same air box (same cone filter) just in a different spot.

The MAF in my truck definitely needed a cleaning at 20K miles (5 years old) when I used only paper filters up until that point.
