I just did my whole engine compartment with eastwood rust encapsulator. Question is, should I top coat it with some type of underhood black? On thier website eastwood says that it is resistent to high temps and uv rays, but just wondering. I like the look of the matte black but my dad keeps telling me I should topcoat it.
Eastwood says you do not need to top coat Rust Encapsulator, but I usually do top coat and I've used the Underhood Black and Chassis Black over Rust Encapsulator. If you decide not to top coat it you should make sure you put on two coats at minimium to be on the safe side.
Is the eastwood rust encapsulator similar to a POR-15, or rust bullet? I have brushed most of my frame and bottom of the truck with POR-15 (I intend to finish it soon). When I get to the engine compartment I am not sure what to use. I figured I would need something high temp I want to spray it but didn’t know if I just use a basecoat clear-coat urethane or what.
I am new to painting but after paying $3,000 (half of the $6,000 for the whole job) and then the painter disappearing, I am having to do this myself and learn as I go. I am sure I will be back with plenty of questions.
cujo8 gave you a great response (thanks cujo8!!!)! As stated, Rust Encapsulator does not need to be top-coated, but top-coating will certainly give you another layer of protection. If you are not top-coating, at least 2 coats of Rust Encapsulator is recommended.
whitetrash, our Rust Encapsulator is similar to the products you mentioned. Rust Encapsulator needs minimal prep (wirebrush the loose rust, clean the surface with Eastwood PRE and apply by spraying or brushing). Rust Encapsulator is UV resistant (unlike some products) and does not need to be top-coated, but can be topcoated with most finishes. RE is also heat resistant to 400F and is available in several different colors. Please feel free to contact us with any questions at techelp@eastwood.com
