Excursion stalling / not cranking

Hello all-1st post

Have a 2000 excursion with 6.8 litre. My wife drove about 30 miles today and engine stalled at freeway offramp. Was able to pull into parking lot and it died.
Engine would not turn over at all making clicking noise like dead battery. I was able to get to truck about 1 hour later and it started up fine. Drove home(30 miles) no problem. Cleaned battery posts and cables. Checked battery and charging system-no problems. Unable to pull codes as OBD fuse, #3 ,was blown. Replaced fuse, linked and no codes given. Any thoughts as to possible problems? I hate to leave wife with unreliable vehicle--Thanks---

First welcome to the FTE. Is you X a gas or diesel? Also, where are you and what was the weather conditions like when this happened (with the onset of winter things that I would think about in 40 deg. Texas may not be what you are experiencing?

Second I presume that you did not have to jump start the vehicle; so I think that you might have water or trash in your fuel tank. Water could accumulate in the tank, try putting a bottle of water absorber in the tank with some good fuel and see if the problem goes away. The next step would be to change out the fuel filters. I hope this helps. If it does not please give more details and maybe someone else can be of more help. We have a bunch of very knowledgeable members who might be able to help you more.

sierra6, the 6.8L is the V10 gasser.

subfitter, I would check or even replace both of your battery cables. Cheap enough and internal shorts/cracks etrc. are more than likely the cause of the no start condition and maybe even the stalling.

If your wife is like mine she cranked and cranked till battery voltage was low.
After sitting the voltage recovered and you restarted it.
I'd put the battery on a slow charge over night as the alternator maintaines battery voltage and doesn't charge the system when heaters , lights , acccessories are taking away from any posible battery recovery.
Change your fuel filter , check to make sure air filter is clean and not wet (snow clogged) and fill up with good fuel.
Good-luck, If momma ain't happy we all know you won't be.
Rich.

I asked her about the cranking. She says the clicking was right after the stall? It's the gas V-10. I am in Washington (about 38 degrees that day). The tank was about 1/4 full. Battery and alternator checked out well. Was considering a PATS problem. Could PATS shut down the motor while driving? Problems separate would send me in obvious directions. The two problems together spell electrical of some sort. I think the cable idea sounds like a possibility, I'll start there. Am considering ignition, PATS receiver, and wiring short in column to start with. Thanks everyone with suggestions.

Monsta, I remembered that about 5 AM today. I am more accustomed to read about diesel engines referred to by how many liters not gas here in the FTE and my brain locked up.
Subfitter, Let us know what you did to fix it or if you need more advice.
