edelbrock 1406 performer carb on a performer 289 intake question
I've got this on my 302 that's now been put into my 79. It's like an 83 motor.
edelbrock performer carb part #1406
edelbrock performer 289 intake part #2121
I've got clearance issues with the carb and the valve covers. the thing's too wide and stuff's rubbing and sitting where it shouldn't be. I need to get about a 1/2 in or 1 in of lift under the carb to get stuff (like the breather and some thing that's on the choke and the throttle body) to quit sitting on stuff it's not supposed to touch. I don't know what the difference between square bore and spread bore is but I went into the store and told them I needed to get that lift and they sold me a part #2696 adapter which for some reason I think is wrong. I've spent the past hour looking on edelbrock's website for info and have found nothing saying anywhere whether it's spread bore or square bore or anything.
HELP??
I can post links to pics of the parts on their website if that would help someone identify it. I've just been doing a search on the parts numbers and they come up really easily. I just don't know what I'm looking at.
MR Gasket and TD performance offer carb spacers. You want one with 4 holes in it. Most parts stores should have them in 1". I know that AutoZone and PepBoys do.
You have the wrong part. You do not need an adaptor.
Your set-up is all square bore, meaning all 4 barrels are the same size.
A spreadbore has small front barrels and large rear barrels like a Q-Jet, Thermoquad ot Motorcraft 4350 series.
Could you post pictures of your current setup? I have the same engine and setup waiting to be installed this weekend and have some questions where things go and what on the manifold I plug
I got that at OReilly. They have a section next to the counter in each store that has all the aftermarket guages and parts like that. We just put a grommet on it and shoved it in there. I like the way it looks better than those can looking filters.
I used a one inch spacer and my husband rigged up the choke power. I don't think I have a pic of the other side though... I bought just a generic breather but ended up going with a taller filter because it just wasn't getting enough air. 3 years later and she's still going strong!
I will have to head in there and see if they have that part. I finally got my timing correct and fixed it enough to start her up. New problem now is the electric fuel pump doesn't fees it enough gas so it just sucks all the gas from the carb and dies.
I'm switching back to the mechinal pump on the engine but buying a high performer Holley one for 65 bucks. Should take care of her thirst issues.

They tried to sell me that part, it is the right one and has both the spacers for the spread and square bore. Out setup is a square bore. They call it am adapter but other people call it a spacer or riser I believe. I need one but not sure if it will cause her to suck in more air and gas. Back to the drawing board this weekend I guess
