truck won't start

Batt good cranks fine. Smells like a gas pump after I crank on it for awile. So ignition right? Where should I start. It is a 92 F250 w/ 351 efi. It ran just fine all day. I parked it for a couple of hours and it would not start. Usually when I hop into it I crank it for 3 sec then restart and it starts right up. If I just turn the key and start it up on the first try it would take about 8 sec. Now nothing atleast it didn't leave me stranded. How about it guys where would you start with this problem?

You can not get fuel into the engine (injectors to fire) without getting the PIP to the PCM Computer.
You may have a bad Fuel Pressure Regulator, pull off the vacuum hose at the nipple of the regulator and turn on the key three times and see if fuel comes out of the nipple. If it does the regulator is bad.
Are you hearing the fuel pump run for one second when you turn on the key or are they running all the time the key is on with the engine not running?

Also check for spark at the plugs as it may not be getting there. You could have bad wires, cap or rotor. Not sure if a bad coil or ICM would stop the PIP or not but at least we know the distributor is turning and the PIP sensor is working OK.

The plugs are new. I replaced the ex mani with headers a few years back so plugs and wires are always an issue. I get a whine and a click everytime I turn the key to run so the pump is working. It is getting fuel because it reeks of gas after youy crank on it for a while. What is PIP I'm old school you know pre-computer the good old days when you could easly figure these things out. Thanks for your post

Like LxMan1 said, it could be the ICM.
