I am wanting to purchase a 1947 1/2 ton which has no paperwork. The frame is stamped 7GC322522. When I try the free vin searches on the net, they require a 17 digit vin #. Is there a way to check the vehicle's past to make sure that it is transferable? Thanks for any response. JP

No past info exists on trucks this old. Your vin should read 71GC 322522. The '1' is the engine code for the 6 cylinder. 'GC' designates a half-ton pickup. The rest is the vehicle production sequence number. A V8 would have a prefix of 799C.

Thanks, I guess I will have AAA track my frame number to see if there are any liens against the truck. Recently California had a story of an ebay Tbird that showed up stolden after the new buyers tried to register it. Makes you sort of paranoid.

In MN we can call the DMV and ask for the current status on that VIN. MN purges inactive data after 7 years (so if the truck hasn't been registered for 7 years the state will no longer have a record of the title or ownership). If there is no record of ownership at the state level and you can provide enough proof that you should be the legit owner, they will give you a title. If you go with AAA see if they check all states for you. I don't know if there is an interstate "hot list" that the DMV checks, but it would ease your mind if that was cross checked in all states.
I have been reading VIN stuff from other sites with interest (there are some really good stories out there, I could pass along?) I have heard though that in CA you should try working through AAA to get your paperwork done, some say they are easier to work with than the normal DMV people.
