04 motor in a 97, 4.0 SOHC

Hi Guys

I have an 97 Explorer 4X4 Auto, air with a 4.0 SOHC motor (vin E) with 145K on the motor.

I have just started to get the timing chain noise. The miles are getting a bit high to put the money into the repair, even with me doing all the work. I called a local junk yard and they have a 2004 Explorer, 4.0 SOHC motor for sale. They want $2,500 for it with 10K on it.
<O

Is the newer motor the same as the older one?

What will I have to change over from the old motor to make it work with the older electronics?

How bad of a job is this? (I do have a full shop)

Am I doing the right thing?
<O

Thanks for your help.

If you get the whole new vehicle, you can do anything. You may need to swap over some of the newer electronics and stuff, so in a lot of ways, you would have a 2004 Explorer with a 1997 body. I would do it if you got the entire donor vehicle. It could still be a doable thing if the motor comes with all the accessories. But the motor may have changed a bit over the years, I know the new design has more horsepower, but also has a shifted torque curve. Everything may work just fine, but I would anticipate some issues with the computers ability to handle a different motor. The exhaust may not line up correctly either, so you might need to change something. As I said, if you got the whole donor vehicle, it makes the job easier, since you will have most of what you need. When you are done, you can sell the remnants of the donor. You may want that donor tranny too.
