Question 1966 F100 Hotrod

I understand that this forum is for the preservation and restoration of classic Ford trucks, but I was hoping to get info that would help me out with a project and try not to offend anyone.

I am building a vintage hotrod out of a 1931 Studebaker Four door sedan. I have a complete car but have deemed the original chassis both unsafe and B.E.R. (beyond economical repair.)

A friend of mine wants to sell me a 1966 F100 long bed rolling chassis.

I've measured both frames and suspension and they are relatively similar in size. I think that with some ingenuity it will work.

Does anyone have any info or tips on doing such a thing?

Is 1966 a good year? I understand it's the second year to have IFS. Are there any problems or quirks that I should know about?

Try these sources, the second listing has a 1931 on their home page.

A bit of irony: Bill Cannon, the founder of the Antique Studebaker Club used to have a publication called "Skinned Knuckles."

Unless you plan on living with the stock ride height, lowering the front end will be an expensive proposition. You will need either dropped I-beams or have to section in a subframe from another vehicle, which kind of negates the advantage of swapping frames in the first place. Steering will also be "like driving a truck" without power assist.

A number of owners of these trucks have used late-model Ford LTD/Crown Vic frames under their trucks which will give you a very low ride height and all the advantages of car handling. Wheelbase is very similar and the chassis is sturdy enough to carry the weight. They are available on the used car market inexpensively, so you may want to check out that option instead. The only downside to those is the frame rails are out by the perimeter of the body, so that may not work for your Stude.

1931 Studebaker wheelbases by Series:

Series 53, 54, 61 = 114" (1979/2007 Crown Vic & Merc Grand Marquis wheelbase = 114")

Series FC = 115"

Series 80 = 122"

Series 70 = 124"

Series 90 = 136"

Not sure what you have?

Post the first 3 digit's of your serial number.

I have the refs, also have the front/rear track measurements.

>> 1966 F100 long bed wheelbase = 129" <<

if i were you, those old studeees are real happy with a 2x3 chassis just fabbed and mandrel bent up to fit a front suspension and rear end, this is the cleanest, cheapest and most hassle free way to do it in my opinion.
