hey guys it's been a while since I last posted on FTE but I have a couple questions for those of you more knowledgeable than I am with the rangers. I have a '89 ranger with the 2.9L and A4LD tranny, the engine is on its last legs but the tranny was rebuilt with a mild shift kit and the ranger itself is also pretty good shape for a beater truck. It's a 4x4 shortbed extended cab with just a couple small spots of cancer. I want to replace the engine but the last time I went through this and put another 2.9L in a different ranger it was nothing but problems. My neighbor has a wrecked early 90's mazda navajo with a 4.0L in it that he is willing to give me but I need to know a couple things first. Are the 4.0L better than the 2.9L (reliability and power wise)? Is the belhousing bolt pattern the same, and what other things such as wiring or any other quirks with the 4.0L's should I be aware of.
Yes, the 4.0L is more reliable and puts out more power. It will bolt up to the A4LD from the 2.9L.
You will, of course, need the computer and all associated sensors, wiring, etc., from the 4.0L. Use the 4.0L mounts. Use the 4.0L exhaust if at all possible. Use the cooling system from the 4.0L, especially the radiator.
