the AC compressor for my 97 f150 4.6 froze up. i took the belt off, i dont need to have AC right now, nor do i have the cash to replace the compressor and get the system re charged. is there another size belt that i can run on my truck while not runnig it over the compressor pulley? if so what size and is there a diagram that i should follow?
any input would help.
I think if you unplug the electrical wire at the ac compressor you should be able to leave the belt on as the compressor will not kick in. It worked on my 91 explorer.
Quite often if the pulley wont turn it's because the bearing in it is seized. That's much cheaper and easier to replace than the whole compressor.
I'm not positive but I believe the belt tensioner is different if you don't have A/C so you probably wont be able to just install a different belt. Your dealer could look up the tensioner and see if the part number is the same with or without A/C.
I just this past weekend replaced the AC pulley on my 98 f150 4x4. Half the ball bearings were missing and it sounded like a diesel when it was running..I managed to replace it with out removing the radiator shroud/radiator etc. Was a tight fit but I feel doable. You will need snap ring plyers, 8mm socket/wrench and something to hold the hub and/or the pulley. GL
