Google or Ask dot com or most of the other search engines you can find lots and lots of different tie down solutions

I moved a thirty year old set from truck to truck for decades before I quit doing the slid in thing and went trailer towing.

Your $500 set sounded high so I did a real quick search and found two different sets unde $250 one new "buy it now" on E-bay and a set at Cabelos...

You could post this down in the tow haul or off road sections if you really need to find a way to self fabricate but I think the $180 to $250 sets look pretty good and much better then the old rig I had from 1968

I'll second Fredvon4 reference pricing with an added caveat for safety. I'd make sure to put a good, safe manufactured set of tie-downs on your camper.......used OR new....Don't compromise safety....I've got a set of happy-jacs purchased with the camper, and when you get on broken/rough ground, a LOT of stress is put on the truck and the camper attachments.....I'd just bite the bullet and get a good pair....

tiedowns

I just bought a camper as well. I happened to find some homemade tiedowns on craigslist for 150. I often see other ones on there. So I recommend looking on craigslist or email me if you want pictures of mine. Hope this helps.

I think I know what your are looking at, are tehy by chance called torklift? they are by far and away the most suppirior camper tie down system avalible, the happyjack system isn't even a comparison. byt the torklifts and don't worry about that $500, the stability, ease to remove and install and if you buy the torklift tunbuckles it makes truck campin a breeeze. even $500 seems like a deal, when I was looking a while back beofre buying my TT I was thinking that a whole system was more around $800?

thanx for the replies the camper jacks are torklift and after consideration I am going buy them.I just wanted to make them myself and spend the $500 on something like an air filter kit or something.

nuckfan,

You can also go to www.rv.net, under the green heading "Forums", click on "read more", then click on "truck campers". I'm sure the folks over there could help you out too.
