buzzing\vibrating sound?

in the past couple thousand miles my 05 f350 v10 auto has
developed this annoying buzzing sound upon acceleration.
seems to happen in a certain rpm band
it is fairly noticable- especially when your in a confined area like
bridge/in between buildings etc...
any one have any ideas what this is?
or how to stop it?
I plan on taking a look on my next oil change
thanks
Josh

A not infrequent problem is loose sheet metal, like the muffler heat shield and the plate between the motor and transmission. For diagnostic purposes insert a shim or popsicle stick wherever there may be some slack until you find the problem.

very likely the inspection cover on the front of the tranny,i used a peel & stick foam insulation & a 1'' strip of steel extending between the 2 bolts that hold the cover on,its quiet now..

I just took my TC inspection cover off, gooped it up with RTV and put it back on. Buzzing went away. I didn't plug the groove in the bottom with RTV. That's there so you'll know if the engine rear seal or transmission front seal is leaking.

Sport45, shirkf7 and BareBones, thanks for answering that

It is indeed probably the exact problem.

See my gallery for my "improved" cover. shirkf7, I never thought of reinforcing it that way. Hmm... my mig welder needs to be dusted off ...

art, that homemade cover looks good, that was my 1st plan, but all the scrap aluminum i have laying around was too small,so i used leftover noise dampening material from a dishwasher repair..it works well, but im not sure how it will hold up after trailering up to snow country this winter..

It's not aluminum, it's galvanized or anodized steel. It came from a rack-mount computer cabinet. Whatever it's plated with, it's pretty thick to the point of 80 Grit paper not going right through it

guys I looked at it today and Im almost positive that is what is buzzing
- so I took it off and put rtv on it
i post back after I drive it wed or thurs

also while i was under there, I saw these vacuum lines running over the front axle
(for esof Im guessing) they were rubbing on a bolt in one spot and sharp edge of the
frame in another spot--anyway it was almost worn thru in one spot! so I put some wire loom around those lines---you all may want to take a look some time

thanks for the help
Josh

Hey, Josh.

I don't know how the vac lines are on the newer models, but during the first years they were made of some cheap rubber - about like what that 90 deg elbow at the throttle body is made of - that deteriorates to the point of turning to dust.

Just FYI

drove about 10 mi. today--heard no buzzing
think its fixed! thanks guys

now on to the next question

I really dread dealing with the dealer and troubles like this one

since roughly about when my tranny recall was done, i have
had an intermitten problem -- when driving in tow\hual mode(w\trailer)
in occasionally hangs up in 2nd gear. usually when im slowing down
or have stopped and then start accelerating again it will happen.
seems to have been getting slightly worse. I t will hang in 2nd gear to
4000+rpms then bang into 3rd. now this is just moderate\average
acceleration -- this truck at those rpms is usually haulling some -ss
and thats not how I drive(except for the very occasional bseg)

I plan to take it in for a tranny svc. and will mention this issue at
that time--any tips on how to approach this one?
I just turned 26k and have grand plans of keeping this truck past 100k
I am worried that as this is an intermitten problem- no action will be taken by
ford -- and then conveniently after 36k miles sh-t will hit the fan and there will be a failure.

thanks for any advice
Josh

Might as well carefully check vacuum hoses.... Squeeze, pinch and mutilate looking for cracks?
