Trip report: San Diego to Ohio and back towing

Took three days to get there and four to get back since I stopped more to sight see on the return trip.

I towed my racecar in a 24' Haulmark to Mid Ohio Sports Car Course for the first NASA Championships and spent four days there. Car and trailer-7k weight plus tools, parts, etc. Estimated at 8500 going and 9500 coming back with spare parts I picked up for a fellow racer in Ill.

Speed 65 mph with cruise control there and back except when traffic or weather made me slow down.

Cal to Ohio netted 9.5 mpg, 2400 miles
Ohio to Ca netted 8.9 mpg, 2450 miles

One note on the return trip is that I bucked 40-60 mph head winds (with gust to 70) from Amarillo to Flagstaff (600 miles). The truck would not stay in 5th and stayed in 4th or 3rd depending if I was also going up a hill due to the head winds. That really killed my return mileage but not as much as I thought it would while also carrying the extra weight.

Zero problems with the truck, racecar or trailer.

Pulled off a 10th place finish out of 24 cars for the national championship.

Some say not to use CC while towing but the towing guide that came with the truck says that if the speed drops something like 8 mph or gains the same while towing, it will kick off and you will have to manually take over the throttle. Basically, nothing says not to use CC and the mileage seems to be really good with it so I will continue to use it while towing. If you think about it, it's no different than me keeping my foot in it to keep the speed the same going up hills than the computer doing the same thing.

good stuff!! i always use my cruise when i reach highway speeds while towing. i usualy keep my OD off till i hit cruisin speeds. mine is a 4R100 (4spd)! the one thing that was a total improvement is when i went from 3.73's to 4.56's that helped keep the truck in OD threw more of the trips to the race tracks. my truck trailer and SD weighed in at 14K!

I'm the same way. When using tow/haul mode just leave it in OD and let the truck take care of itself, it seems to do a very good job doing that. Even going down mountain passes the truck seems to read my mind and downshifts automatically when needed. The V10 with the TS is an awesome combination especially in tow/haul mode.

I was there as well. Came in from Suffolk, VA (about 600 to 700 miles depending on the route). I drive the #72 Porsche 944. Towed my 8000LB trailer with my 99 F250SD manual. I averaged around 8MPG.

Good report! I have driven that stretch many times...and those head winds are just about always an issue.

YES, use that CC...and let the SD take it from there.

Congrats on the 10th place finish!

Give this man some reputation points fellows..(hover mouse over scales in upper right corner)

Great report, Congrats on the 10th place those courses are tough, much fun to watch... I missed it on Speed channel ...hope they re-run so I can try and pick out you and your car

REF the cruise control

Your 2005 is electronic throttle and the Cruise Control is integrated int that system. No longer an additional vacuum or mechanical actuator and all the extra sensors... That "smart" Cruise Control coupled with the "smart" Transmission (5R110W) makes for a very efficient and competent combination.... Mine will adjust speeds in 0.25 MPH increments according to my high tech GPS....smoothest operating CC I have ever owned. I use it every day and on every cross country trip in normal or Tow/Haul mode and it is about as perfect a system as I think can be designed

Can you tell I like the refinements in the 05 and up 3v V10 and 5R110w power train? BSEG fer sure!
