Question Oil Temp Gauge Installation 2005 SD V10

I recently installed a tranny temp gauge and an oil pressure gauge in my 05 F350 w/ V10, both are autometer gauges.

I want to also install an engine oil temp gauge, but I have no idea where to place the sending unit. My oil pressure sending unit is installed with a T fitting where the factory oil pressure sending unit is located. Has anyone installed a oil temp gauge? If so, where is the best location for the sender? I cannot weld, so that is out.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I know someone on here must have installed an oil temp gauge? Can anyone lend a hand, or at least point me in the right direction?

From memory: On the back side of both cylinder heads, and in a terrible place to get to, are several hex head "plugs". I bet money one or more is an oil passage and one or more are into the water jacket. They are about the standard size that most NPT (National Pipe Thread) sending units would be, so it is just a matter of finding one that looks like the size your sender is and pulling the plug. Either oil or coolant is going to pee out.

I also know that on both sides of the block...a little easier to get to are some more of those plugs. Look to the rear a little and slightly above the large "adapter" that the oil filter spins up onto. You will see a shinny silver "plug" recessed into the black cast iron block. Same deal, it is either oil or water passage.

Careful with the ones on the block, do not remove with a hot motor. Fluid IS going to pee out and in the case of coolant, a LOT of it unless you are ready to stick something back in the hole!

oil temp seems to be a little overkill ,for what its worth to install it.Water temp would make more sense to me.
I mean are you running the Baja 500 or something
Sorry I had to add ,my 2 cents worth.

aaronbrace,

I'm interested in installing a oil pressure gauge. Two questions, where is the factory sending unit located? Did you tee off of that?

Thanks,
RustyFuryIII

Run these V10's at 4500RPM uphill with 12Klbs behind it, and I'd prefer to know what my oil temp was

with all my yrs of driving over the road.I have found the the main three
oil psi /water temp/amp meter were the most useful to help prevent problems, now a tranny temp gauge is your friend also!
Your oil very seldom passes your water temp, if it does ,your in trouble already!

To each there own but the aftermarket guage people are taking your money not me!

Have fun !

OK, I'll admit it, it's just another gauge to look at The more the better, right?

I installed a vacuum gauge on my V10. Now you know where I'm coming from ...

I'd still be interested.

back to the original topic:

Usually, you get a bung welded into the oil pan for the temp sensor.

But I see no reason you couldn't use one of Fred's oil taps

The only bad place is on a "T" with the oil pressure sender because there's no flow past the sensor.

Rustyfuryiii,

The factory oil pressure sending unit is located on the drivers side of the engine, towards the front. There is close to ZERO room on the V10 to put in a T, but it is possible. I just didn't want to remove the factory sending unit.

I purchased the autometer cobalt, FULL SWEEP electric. I am noting the full sweep, because for some reason, the sending unit with it is a lot smaller than your standard quarter sweep gauge's sending unit.

I purchased the official autometer T with it. A standard brass T from a plumbing supply place was just too big. I used about 4 different fittings (reducers, etc) to make it work, but it works like a champ. Just use a good thread sealer.

Take a look at yours, if you have problems, let me know. I'm sure I can take some pics and maybe even throw together a parts list.
