I got a Holley model 4160 600cfm mounted on my 351m with an electric choke. The carb works great besides the first initial start of the day. It has the same problem whether it is 20 below, or 100 degrees out (like it is now), it just doesn't matter. When you start the truck later on in the day, like after driving it, letting it sit for 4 hours, and starting it, it works fine. Here is what I know. The choke plate closes properly at the pump of the pedal. The choke is wired correctly, you can see it slowly opening as it runs. I have tried different adjustments to the choke housing by turning it clockwise and counterclockwise with no luck. It starts, but the fast idle is not working. You have to stay in the truck, slightly holding the throttle, if you let off, it dies. Once it warms up a bit, it's good to go. I thought the point of the fast idle mechanism was so that you didn't have to stay in the truck, holding the throttle slightly, until it warms. The fast idle works as it should when starting it at all other times but the first initial start of the day (cold engine). What is the issue? My old Holley 750 did the same thing. Is it just a "Holley thing"?
There is an adjistment screw for the fast idle, on the throttle shaft linkage, just under the choke mechanism..You will only be able to see it when the throttle is held wide open..If you lift the fast idle cam up with your finger (plastic piece), and then open the throttle and release (with the engine warm), then start the truck..The idle should be 1400 to 1600 RPM. Likley your rpm is set too low..it needs a little more when the choke is on and the motor is cold...No its not a Holley thing
