Gas Mileage

Hello,
I just found this site, and am trying to get a little help. I just purchased an '05 Ford Ranger Edge. 3.0, with 4X4 capability. I use it as a work truck. I've switched from conventional oil to a synthetic due to the harsh driving conditions this will be forced to perform in. The problem I'm having is the gas mileage. I'm currently getting 240-270 miles to the tank. Is there anyway at all to extend the mileage on this?

I was going to buy the Tornado air injection system, plus the magnetic for the fuel injection system, however, two master mechanics have cautioned me against that.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks

Bithlo

Go with a cold air intake and a free flowing exhaust. Consider a reprogrammer as well. That should give you 3-5 more mpg. Also, go with performance spark plugs, and synthetic fluids in the motor.

Right on. The tornado and magnetic thing are gimmicks to rip you off, plain and simple, beat to death on here.

Get a chip, they aren't really cheap, but they tend to increase your gas mileage a good bit. Remember these tanks aren't huge either. By 200 miles I'm down to a quarter tank or so and I get over 20 MPG regularly. Next time you fill up figure up your MPG and tell us that.

From what I've heard a underdrive pulley, electric fan and programmer are the best mods for the 3.0L. For the intake get a Amsoil Eaa filter, in my experience a full intake will only hurt your mileage. But the programmer if properly setup will utilize the intake more fully and help in that aspect.

You could try synthetic fluids, in the motor, trans, and rearend. Also an e-fan, and udp can help take a little load off the engine, not much, but every little bit helps. I run the stuff that I just mentioned, and as I reported in another post, I just checked my mpg on my 4x4 with a 4.0, and I'm getting 22. I don't know if this stuffed helped, but it sure didn't hurt. I also heard that a tunnue cover can help. A good tuneup, properly inflated tires, and driving style will for sure help.

biggest things ive found is to keep the motor tuned up and tires fully inflated, take it easy on the throttle and synthetics will help a little, im getting a consistant 19 with my 4.0 4x4 with the 5 spd stick and 3.73 gearing, stock 235-15 tires. was getting 17-18 before using synthetic motor oil. i also coast to a stop rather than downshift through the gears. (i do use gearing to slow down in winter conditions however)

Thanks Guys

I have a 3.0 engine. But did not know about modifying the computer chip to increase the mileage. Thanks everyone.

You gotta pretty figure that 20-22MPG is the best your going to get with that set-up.
