ABS light on and off - 99 EXPY

I have a 99 Expedition and the ABS light will come on and if I restart it most of the time it will go off. The dealer said that if it doesn't stay on they can't determine what the problem is. Any suggestions or anyone else have this problem? Sounds to me like a bad sensor (ideas on the cost to replace?)

The rear wheel speed sensor started going out on mine which caused the ABS light to come on. After replacing it, no more problems.

Rear wheel speed sensors are easy to change and I think I paid about $ 20 at Checker Auto Supply.

Mine had same problem. You can remove the sensor off the rear differential (on top. one bolt and one electrical connection)and clean it. It gets clogged up with small metal fragments, since it is a magnet. I replaced mine with a dealer part and is very simple. If that doesn't fix it, which usually does, something else is going wrong with the abs system

While the rear diff sensor accounts for a lot of the reported ABS lights around here, there are a number of other reasons.

If you don't read the ABS codes, you're left with guessing or testing/replacing individual parts in the hope of getting it right.

If you have rear-only ABS, you can easily read the codes yourself.

If you have 4 wheel ABS, you will need a scantool that can read ABS codes. These are not cheap, you won't find them at the local auto parts store.
