Truck in real good condition, oil changes, drive mild not too wild, but we got a problem. twice now, 6 weeks ago and now today first start of the day. The engine starts great, normal for 1 or 2 seconds, then dies. Again, again, again finally 5 time or so it starts and runs fine. I could live with this but I KNOW it will really die when I am 80 miles from home. Know what I mean?
So far people in the know tell me it may be the Idle Air Control Valve (or motor). But I will not take it to ford while the problem is so inconsistant.

I too have a 99 F150 4X4, 5.4. It has had same problem in the past. The fix was the IAC, or idle air control valve. Relatively inexpensive at AdnacedAuto Parts. Easy to install. Should help your idling problems.
I had the same problem with my 98 4.6L. The frist time I cleaned the IAC with some carb cleaner and it lasted about a year before the same problem returned. I caved in and bought a new IAC and it's fixed.
Sounds like the same malfunction I had the other day. Starts, then dies. Remove the IAC and look to see if it's stuck shut. Mine was, I tapped it with a rubber mallet to break it loose, reinstalled it, drove to the local parts house, replaced the IAC, and have been symptom free since. Thanks to all of you who take the time to post your problems and fixes on this site. Because of you, I only paid out $55 to fix this.
