98 f150 4.2 oil pressure problems

Hello everyone, this is my first time posting and am doing so under duress.
My beloved truck almost left me today, and was wondering if anyone has experienced the same issue. Driving home my oil pressure dropped completely, I immediadely shut her down and let it sit for a few minutes, then restarted and the pressure was fine. After dirving for a spell the problem re-occurred and I stopped and restarted with the same results. I am sure it is not a sending unit issue because I experinced some tappit noise, probably now have some upper engine problems now but that is another matter. Has anyone experinced a similar situation.
Thanks for your assistance,
e

Welcome to the forum
Sounds like you might possibly have a clogged oil pump pick-up. You might try our 4.2L forum farther down the main forum page. You might have better results in there.

Hey erod, Welcome to FTE!
Your problem does not sound like a common problem with the 4.2. I can't say I remember anyone posting with that specific problem.
Remember, the oil pressure "gauge" is really just an idiot light with a hand on it rather than a bulb to light up. I don't remember what the pressure is that sends it to "normal" but I do seem to recall it is pretty low.

I'd agree with Jimmy, maybe a clogged oil pick-up.

Maybe a real oil pressure gauge would be of some help.

Just to be sure, you did check the oil level, right?
Just to be sure, I'd probably do a drain and oil refill with a new filter.

Erod,

Saw the same problem with the truck I put a rebuilt in last summer, oil pickup was clogged. Although the previous owner was having oil and filter changes at the proper interval the shop he was taking it to was not using the correct, semi-synthetic called for. I make this assumption based on how much sludge was in the engine when I took it apart. I also know he didn't have any overheating issues until he cracked a head. It dosen't sound like you did any real damage but if you keep running it you could.

I'd recommend dropping the pan and cleaning out the pick-up, and pan if necessary. I'd also check out the inside of the valve covers too. If you see sludge build-up the oil system should be flushed. Some one else out there may be able to give you some suggestions here. I have never done it. Hope this helps.
