I have a 56 F100 with a 3 speed light duty column shift transmission. There is a 1/4" hole located on the right side rear lower corner of the transmission housing just above the bottom bearing retainer bolt. There is transmission oil leaking from the hole. Does anyone know what this hole is for and what the leak means? Should the hole be plugged?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Steve
Steve, Did you ever find out about that 1/4" hole in your tranny? I have a 56' also my tranny is the same. Hope to hear from you either way. Thanks Phil
I beleive the hole you are refferring to is for the countershaft pin, its a press fit and shouldn't leak, but after all these years most do, but it is usually just minor...I have never seen one plugged but maybe a little silicon in there may help..JIM
Thanks Hiball3985 for your expert advice and Cuz'in Phil for your interest. Due to a lack of responses, I have taken matters into my own hands and also determined that the hole must be for the anti-rotation pin for the countersahft. What I don't know is whether the pin has fallen out or is still in the hole. A screw driver goes about one inch into the hole before it stops. Does anybody know whether this is the normal pin length? To stop the leak I have plugged the hole with a wooden dowel sealed with liquid duct tape (silicone). Any other thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks again.

for what its worth, 1 inch doesn't sound right, I don't think the pin will go that far in, possible it sheared off, I'll craul under my truck tonight and check the depth and let you know...
Jim
Thank you so much hiball3985, you have gone way beyond the call of duty! Since I now know that the pin location is normal, I can avoid taking the output end of the tranny apart. I hope that I can return the favor for another forum member soon.
Many thanks,
Steve
your welcome, thinking mine wasn't in that far I dicovered it was just filled with dirt, so I cleaned it out, now it will probaly leak....lol...wish I had remembered about the one in the back of the garage first, these old bones don't crawl under the truck so well anymore
