need gcwr 1996 f150 I6 auto 3.08

Today I looked at a nice 1996 F150XL with I6, auto trans, and 3.08 non-LS axle (axle code 18). Owner doesn't have the manual. Can someone look in their 1996 manual and tell me the GCWR and towing capacity for this combination?

Also, owner claims he twice took 150 mile trips towing a 7500 lb trailer with no problem. I know this is way out of the limit for this truck. Could he have severely damaged the transmission or engine with these idiotic pulls, or was he just risking melting his brakes and killing himself? The truck does have a transmission oil cooler which makes me feel a little better.

Thanks for your help.

Donald

Thanks for the link -- this manual will come in handy if I do buy the truck. GCWR is 9000#, and trailer capacity is 4600#. Both 1000# less than the 3.55 axle. I guess I'll get better mileage with the 3.08 when I travel unladen 98% of the time, and I should be able to cope with the lower trailer capacity. I think I'll call my mechanic Monday to see if he can check out the truck.

i have a 1996 f150 inline 6 with the 4 speed with overdrive(5 speed total) manual 2wd i pulled my buddys bobcat 2 times with it. i have air shocks on the rear it still sagged a little but had no problem taking off! i never use first gear unless i am towing. always take off in 2nd i cant remember witch rear mine has but i think it has lower gears than what you listed with a limited slip. I WOULD NOT RECOMEND TOWING THIS KIND OF WEIGHT BUT MY BUDDYS TRUCK HAD BROKE DOWN it pulled it fine and stopped it ok but i do have a trailer brake and the trailer had brakes. i cant say how the automatic is but the inline 6 with the manual is a pulling machine!!!!!!!

Donald, I don't think I would consider it if I were planing on towing. While the I6 is known to be torquie, it aint got the gonads for towing with that rear. It would need to turn more rpms to make the power needed. IMHO

Thanks for the advice. If I were doing serious towing, I wouldn't consider this truck any further either. The absolute most I'll do, though, is pull a 4500# trailer + horse combination 4 miles each way two times a week. More likely, it will turn out to be once every month or two. Given that this is within the listed limits, I'm okay with the marginal towing capacity of this combination. Seems a fair trade for the better mileage I'll get the rest of the time with that 3.08 rear end.
