Question Are Burnt Valves Common in 302?

I'm going on my second Bronco and in each case there is a "Burnt Valve" issue in regards to the 302. The weird thing is that on both engines it's the number 8 cylinder which impacts number 4. My first Bronco is an 84 and the one I'm getting this week is a 92.

Is this a common problem with the 302? This is my first post. I have always loved the Bronco. It is only now that I can finally drive the vehicle that I've always wanted. Talk about practical: 4 Wheel Drive, Carry 5 peeps, cargo room, a removeable top, up off the ground-so-things-move-slower and a body style that kills. Thanks for reading my thread.

The number 8 cylinder is known to get a higher amount of PCV return through it due to the location of the port on the intake being directly in line with the intake runner for this cylinder. This tends to cause this cylinder to build up with crud and foul plugs, burn rings, valves etc. more frequently than the rest of them. This is true of the 5.8 as well. Its been a while since I have read anything on it but I seem to recall a thread here or an article that discussed possible solutions to the problem OTHER than strict monitoring of the condition of the PCV valve. Unfortunately, I haven't got the links to them. I do know that this IS a concern for older (higher mileage) 302's and 351w's.

Speculation on my part would tend to make me think that possibly relocating the vacuum port for the PCV in the intake might be of some value. But my expertise is limited. you might want to pose this question in the small block V8 forum and see what responses you get.

I wouldn't consider it a common problem in a 302 at all. As Greystreak pointed out, it usually occurs on high mileage engines and can be attributed to the pcv.

There is also can be a problem with the #7 and #8 plug wires cross firing. This can cause detonation in #8 and burnt valves, pistons, ect...

Keep looking I remember reading about technical service bulletin for the fuel injected truck/van 302 with regard to the type of failures listed. Advised relocating PCV valve.

Well, I've had both problems....the one with #7 & 8 wires crossing (easy fix obviously...just some wires looms) and burnt valves. I had a Jasper 302 do it to me, luckily just before the warranty ran out so it was taken care of quickly, but this was only after 60,000 miles. I'm told that's average to above average for how long a Jasper should last too.

I'm grateful for you guy's getting back to me. I just bought a 92 Bronco XLT and she has high mileage as well. We're gonna put rebuilt heads on her and I'm gonna read up on relocating the PCV port. I really appreciate the feedback and I'm really glad that I joined the FTE forum.

Broncocrazy,

With a high mileage 302, keep a close eye on the airbox UNDER the filter. When these engines age, the increased blow-by from worn rings tends to allow the breather filter under there and the lower portion of the airbox itself to take on noticable amounts of motor oil. Replacing the PCV valve will usually help at first but it eventually means engine overhaul. Not to scare ya, just some info so you can keep an eye on it.

Fuel inj. problems my acure also !!! after 100,000 I would change em out sumitt 215.00 19lbs new ford motor sports . That is what caused my valves to burn oil must be changed very often 2,500 miles & tune - up every 30,000 miles inc. pvc valve ! the only fuel inj. cleaner that works is BG 44K but its just a quick fix !!
