Arrow More Power & Timing Adjustments?

I have an '88 Bronco 5.0 with a 302, and I am trying to get more power out of what I got. I have heard from a few people that I must replace a chip before I can really do anything. What are they refering to that I could get more power from? I am also trying to adujust the timing, but I am told to disconnect the In-line spout connector but I don't know what it is, or where to find it. Please help!

the spout or spark output connector should be located near the dizzy coming from the same harness with the connector for the TFI-IV module. you remove the spout plug from the connector to set base timing. it's a small rectangular shaped plug.

the chip they are refering to is in the EEC-IV computer. your computer/engine is speed density using a manifold absolute pressure sensor to manage air/fuel mixtures. this system is much less tolerant to performance upgrades than mass air controlled systems. in other word, the more you try to improve performance, the worse your engine may run. i would guess you are being advised to convert from speed density to mass air which requires changing the chip, adding some wires and a mass air meter and would be a good first step for more serious performance upgrades. FMS sells a kit for approx. $500. cheers, garsten
