Hello,
I have a 1997 Ford Ranger v6 3.0L and the 4WD seems to engage but after it engages there are these clicking sounds from the front left tire area. Sometimes if you stop and put it into 4wd it will click a few times then stop. This truck has the switch inside to engage 4wd. Has anyone heard of this and might can shed some light on what the problem might be and how to fix it??
Thanks
kds
my mother in laws 97 is same way its only once in awhile never found out reason for it we asumed it might of been water inside of hub freezing itup due to the fact that the 4 wd is only used in the winter if u get an answer on it let me know thanks
It is one or both of the front hubs trying to engage. Best case would be they just need lubrication. They should not be packed with grease, but just lubed enough so that they can engage easily. The worst case is the hubs are going bad and will have to be replaced. If you have the original type, they go for $300 each. I did this once. When those went bad I converted to Warn hubs. They're $90 each and another $20, or so, for a conversion kit. I'm not a mechanic, but this has been my experience with my '96 Ranger that I bought new over 9 years ago. I now have a similar problem that I should probably start a new thread for. When I turn in 4WD I get a grinding sound from the front wheels. Its okay in 2WD, but when the hubs are locked and the transfer case is in 4WD I get a terrible sound from up there. I suspect it is one or both of the front drive U joints.
Thanks to RonTrampe reply after removing the hub cab there was a lot of almost black grease so I took an old rag and wiped off most of all the old grease and applied some new grease around the shaft and inside the hub were the berings were. I put everything back together and now there is no clicking sounds from the front when I engage it in 4wd. Thank you very much for your help!
