Cool Ranger Problem?

I have a 1999 Ford Ranger, I'm driving along and suddenly the truck stops running...won't restart, cranks but won't start and I'm towed home.

I'm thinking fuel pump...can anyone advise.

I also noticed the THEFT light flashing as the engine is cranking. could it be the Anti-theft system...the chip in the key?

Please send help... two days no truck!

I would first check to see if spark or fuel supply are missing.

Well as has been suggested on the fire & fuel checks I'd begin with....
1) Check the plugin for the coil pack, make shure it's plugged in & latched tight. If you find it loose, check the contacts for damage or corrosion.

2) Push the inertia/collision fuel pump cutoff switch, located in the passenger side foot well, on the firewall, just above the carpet, above where your right foot would rest. Then see if she'll start.

3) Check the fuses for the coil pack & fuel pump. Do more than just a visual on the fuse. Use a test light or volt meter on BOTH side of the fuse. You should get power on both sides, if it's good. I've seen them LOOK ok, but be bad internally.

4) If you find a blown fuse, you might try & replace it & see if it blows again right away.
If so, there's a short to ground between the fuse & it's end point, that must be put right.

If not, see if she'll start, but you'll need to determine WHY it blew in the first place.

Usually because of a chaffed wire somewhere, shorting to ground.

So look for spots where wires cross or lay against & rub on metal, especially HOT metal.

Seems the blinking antitheft light might be a clue, but it doesn't come to me as yet.

4) If you have access to a scanner, it might be able to pinpoint the problem area, or at least the problem system.

Hope these simple first steps help locate the problem area.

Let us know what you find. pawpaw

If you are getting spark, listen for the fuel pump to run for 2-3 seconds when you turn the key on,check the enertia switch like Paw-Paw said,if its good you will want to check the fuel pump RELAY,in the under hood fuse box. sometimes tapping on it a few time will unstick it.They are only $10 anyway.

last time that happened to a friend of mine.. v6, distibutorless ignition. cause by a damaged crank sensor. this happened to him with NO warning. I'd check that if the previous posts led to no avail. This should kill both fuel and spark. If you suspect the key, try a replacement, or if you you must, defeat the ignition manually, but my opinion is that its very unlikely that system failed.

Sounds familiar...I was driving home from work about three weeks ago, doin 75 in the fast lane, and my 94 ranger just quit on me. Turned out to be the timing belt. $670 for new belt, tensioner, water pump and thermostat.

Thanks for the threads on the Ranger.

Everyone helped a lot. After two days I realized that The extended Warrenty is still in effect so now it's Fords problem.

Thanks again!

The Problem was the receiver in the column and the chip in the key...who knew?

The fuel pump was not effected!

Thanks to my local dealer I got the truck back in two days.

Thanks again to everybody for your help!

Hd410, thanks for the good feedback. I too have a 99 Ranger with Secure-A-Lock, I'll have to file this one for future reference.

Do you know if they found it with a scanner, or just poking around????

Wonder if Ford is having many problems with this system????

I believe they found it with the scanner...and they didn't report it as an ongoing problem.

This whole experiance has been "food for thought"
