Hello. I have a 87 BII 4x4 with auto V6 The problem is when I start to slow down there is a load clunking noise from under the car. This usually only happens when I have been on the highway and then come into the city. I will slow down to stop and at about 15MPH that's when it starts. Its sounds like it is coming from the rear, but I don't know. I don't feel anything loose and I can't feel anything when I am driving. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
do you hear this noise if you shift into netural and coast down?? if not I would be looking at the transmission. I had problem that showed up when it shifted down, acted like not pushing the clutch in on a standard and tring to stop. It was valve body clean up time. Hope its other.
It does it in any gear, just when I am stopping. It only does it after I have been going on the highway. If I am just going around the city there isn't any noise at all.
I know mine has a clunk when stopping from a loose shock absorber bushing. Could also be a sway bar bushing. If there's a chance it could be coming from the front there are more bushings up front, including sway bar bushings, shock absorber bushings, and radius arm bushings (which are fairly prone to failure). The fact that it seems intermittent makes it that much harder to find. I might try getting it to the point of clunking, then get under the truck and start grabbing things and see if anythings loose.
