98 Ford Expedition 4.6L - stuck shift lever
I had to replace 2 solenoids in my transmission. I put the truck on ramps, set the E-brake, chocked the wheels & disconnected the battery before doing any work underneath
To get to 1 of the solenoids I had to remove the transmission range sensor & the shift link cable from the cylinder that enters the transmission housing. Now I'm putting it back together. I made sure the TR sensor is aligned properly. The guide tells me that to get the shift cable reattached & aligned properly I need to put the truck in D.
Here's the problem. The shift lever feels like it gets to R but doesn't quite get to center of R on the indicator. Then it hits a wall, I can't shift any further. I figured it's the shift interlock safety mechanism so I look up the steps on how to bypass that. I follow those steps but it doesn't change the outcome it's the same situation hits a wall somewhere around R.
Now I'm tearing off the housing on the steering column to locate the shift lock solenoid (and brake switch), but I feel like I'm going down a rabbit hole for me no good reason. Why would the shift lock solenoid or brake switch go bad from the work I performed so far? Battery was disconnected before any work so there shouldn't have been an electronic failure of these parts or a fuse burned out.
Does anybody have an idea as to what is going on or what I should try next to get to the bottom of this?!?
Thank you in advance,
Corey
