Rented a torque wrench from o'reilly's to remove the bolt and reinstall when I set the torque ranch to what looked like 94' pounds 85 plus nine kept spinning thought I was getting really close so I backed it down restarted ba I at 85' pounds it clicked, I knew I had at that much, set to 91' pounds it clicked knew I had that much and then set it back to 94 it ended up spinning seve5al turns then snapped the bolt. Need to figure out where I can get one today without having to order from the diesel shops and waiting for it to come in. Does anyone know exactly what type of bolt it is and grade is very important too.
ALSO, ANYONE HAD THIS HAPPEN AND KNOW IF I CAN EASILY GET SOMETHING TORQUED THAT HIGH OUT WITH AN EXTRACTOR??
IVE ONLY HAD TO USE EXTRACTOR ONCE FOR VERY SMALL BOLT. RATHER THAN FIGHT LOOS3NING 95LBS IF NOT EASY I WILL TALE IT SOMEWHERE IM TIRED OF IT
I only had the 2 bolts in to hold it at that point so yes I already backed out the 2 bolts and removed the oil pump from the truck I plan on taking it to a shop I just don't want to screw with it at this point anymore everything has been fighting me on the truck I've already broke the EB P sensor trying to get those connections loose with the 2 wrenches it never came loose I even used heat on the So B and I will have to replace a very expensive EB P so at this point I'm done fighting with it . I replaced the Turbo Pedestal With a non EB PV pedestaland rebuilt the Turbo, So yeah after fighting that back clamp on the Turbo and multiple trips to the store to get this part and that sockit was an easier job to do the Turbo and pedestal I think for me As with this removal install what's the problem I even lost the check ball and had to hunt down a new one
Called Tire Kingdom here in Florida they said bring it up they do mechanic work 3 of them looked at the pump and said 90' pounds is a lot there's nothing to grab onto you could Take it to Smitty's muffler shop or try wielding a nut onto the bolt. But they said they were afraid to mess it up trying to grab on to something while backing the bolt out. So I went home feeling defeated Got my welding machine out and hooked up right at that moment, clay with riff raff called me back since I had put in a call to him I asked him if he knew the size he said he didn't. anyway he told me the bolt is not under compression in the threads it doesnt bottom out. I should get it off.... Welded a nut onto what was left of the bolt just filled the center of the nut full of wild put a wrench on it and the son of a gun just came out like it wasn't even tightened I never knew that I thought I screwed it in and it would be extremely hard to get it loose
So if anyone snaps a bolt off of there don't fret welled a small amount of any size on to whatever thread you got left and it should just come out by finger loosening it
Thanks. put a 30mm M12 1.75on it the other day. Im having problems torqueing it though. The gear is on straight goes to the spot on shaft. But rented 1/2" wrench just kept turning after 80lbs. Torque just wasn't feeling right after I had already started in 5lb. Increments at 55lbs, took to many turns never clicked then broke bolt this was the first time....this time New 3/8" wrench from Autozone broke the 3" extension, torques from 55 to 65 then problems at 80lbs, backed it down to 70lb. Same **** but broke extension at 70 after it had already torqued to 75 but wont click 80.
I'm afraid to snap another bolt. Brandon old post on here from 2010 where the person that owns or works diesel site says tightened it to 95' pounds or until the drive gear spends well gears already started spinning 50lbs torque pounds
it does sound like that but **** the wrench with needle says 90lbs. Maybe its overtorqed. I was readi.g once a year Should recalibrate but I haven't much experience with torque inches just one sitting in my Box for years and it turned out not to work because it was broken so if these things need to be calibrated often maybe just sitting on the shelf at the store for a year before being sold could affect it???
Torque wrench accuracy depends a lot on care/abuse and brand.
I have four high-dollar ones that are ALL over 10 years old and the 1/2" Snap-off that likely has torqued over 25000 lug nuts and half as many head bolts, main bearing caps, etc. has NEVER needed a repair or calibration; it hits the tolerance on the tool truck tester every time. The only problem it has is the laser-etched numbers are really getting hard to read.
The 3/8" Mac, 1/4" Matco, and 3/4" Matco are the same way....minus the laser-etching.
something sure seems odd. I have never seen the hpop gear bolt snap. the engine turns over before it can get to that kind of torque
Yep, the engine turns over way before torque is reached (or the pickup will run a fella over if it's a manual) and the crank bolt needs to be held at the same time.
Sounds like you pulled a thread and won’t let the bolt clamp down. Had this happen at work the other day….
I agree with this. @Chris0611 , chase the threads with a tap before attempting another install. Where did you get this HPOP from?

Well, he did say he rented the torque wrench from The Unlucky Irish store. Tools from there are always suspect.
