Confused on boost leak test

So I have hooked up my boost leak kit. I cannot find any leaks using soapy water. However all of the pressure I put into the system comes out of the black and yellow oil fill hole.

this is odd to me as I have zero blow by for the most part.

I have close to zero off the line power unless I’m using a 40 or 60 tune.

thoughts? Help?!?

For clarification are you saying you are hearing air come out of the oil fill? If so you are getting blow-by from the rings. Was the engine hot/ warm when dong the test? If flowing out the tail pipe one or more valves have not seated properly try to roll the engine by hand a bit to move the valves.

That is all I have without more information.

I am interested in your findings! I have next to nothing off the line but once I hit 12-1500 she runs like a scalded dog , I am thinking it’s fairly normal to not have a big boost off the line , turbo needs to spool up

Is your ccv hooked up to your intake tube? If so you pressurizing the crank case . Your intake looks different than mine so I can't tell from the picture but usually you have to just hook up the boost gauge directly to the tube coming off of your turbo
on edit : your intake is the same as mine, you have to remove the fitting in the middle of your intake tube and hook up the gauge to the first tube coming off the turbo

Yep... missed that part you are putting air directly into the pan.. Hook it up directly to the turbo then tell us what you get.

There is a tube that goes down into the engine on the air intake tube. I did not take enough of the intake tube off. If you remove all but the first tube into the turbo it will detach the tube that goes into the engine.

i was directly putting air into engine.

I fixed it and was able to get it pressurized. Found one leak I took care of.

however I still have absolutely garbage off the line power. 16 seconds 0-60 time. When the rpms hit 2100 the turbo kicks in and it starts going.

wondering if I got bad fuel pressure?

my throttle seems to react quite well so I doubt it’s the tps.

Most likely exhaust drive pressure leaks. Look for soot at manifold-head, manifold-uppipe, uppipe-baby’s butt connections. You can do a feel test with your hand around the manifolds on a cold start.

Or maybe you have more boost leaks?
I went a long time thinking mine was good since I’d never seen a comparison. This is my reference video after I fixed the plenum leak that had been hiding on me. This may be better than most, but it gives you an idea of what you should see. The biggest thing I noticed is how it basically stops dropping at 10psi. Before with the plenum leak it would just keep going down.

After watching that I am thinking I got more leaks. Back to work on it tomorrow.

Using a gauge with finer resolution ("more sweep to see the creep") may help.

Correct! But that’s the one I had in the spare parts drawer so…

It would be beneficial to have better ranged gauge however that wasn’t the problem in my case. I just didn’t know what a good test should have looked like. Knowing some would leak past the rings I thought my previous condition was normal. There is a drastic change between my before and after. Just wish I’d have thought to have taken a before video. Oops.

I saw your video for the first time the other day and I was definitely impressed! None of my boost leak test held nearly close to what yours did. My truck ocd is starting to flare up
racinJ did you just use the Motorcraft RTV sealant to seal up your plenums?

Yes, I used the recommended Motorcraft TA-31 sealant. But I only did the leaking drivers side plenum. Left the more difficult passenger side as shipped from factory.

If both sides were leaking I was gonna go with the Riffraff billet plenums just for ease of assembly. Did a very extensive leak check with soapy water all over the passenger side before placing the order for the TA-31.

My truck only has 102k so maybe that’s part of why it’s sealed so well. Might have to do a check on dad’s 325k truck next time it’s over here just as a comparison. But on the other hand it runs well so maybe what we don’t know won’t hurt us.
