2002 liftgate strut removal - how do you get them off the ballstuds?

2002 liftgate strut removal - how do you get them off the ballstuds?
How are you supposed to get the liftgate struts off the ballstuds? I've inspected them closely and there are no clips to release, but if you try to pull or pry them off, you can see the metal around the stud starting to flex and bend.
Are you supposed to unscrew the ballstuds, then clamp the struts in a vice and separate the studs that way?
