I'm on the fence on whether or not to purchase a new truck.
I have a very low mileage 7.3PSD that I bought new and is still very much like new. One big reason my current truck is in such great condition is that it has never been a daily driver. It spends its days in an insulated shop, and only comes out when a trailer needs to be pulled, etc. Current truck has not given me a single problem and has never been to the dealer or any repair shop. I take care of all of its routine maintenance, and that is all it has ever needed.
New trucks have a lot going for them, but (IMO) being risk free to hang onto long after the warranty has expired is not one of their many attributes.
So I'm wondering: which would be more likely to remain 1) trouble free and 2) easy to perform maintenance and (if necessary) repair:
a. like new (but almost 20 years old) 7.3PSD
b. new 7.3gas
Oh, I guess I should mention that my current truck has the manual 6spd tranny which has a very good reputation for durability as does (duh) the 7.3PSD.
I'll also mention that the performance of either truck is fine for my needs and will not be a factor. I am confident that the new 7.3 with auto tranny will run circles around my slow shifting old school diesel.
TIA.

Reason: typo
IMO, the 7.3 gas is the most practical, interesting, and enticing engine platform Ford has had since the 7.3 diesel but like the OP, I have a 2002 in great shape. As nice as it would be to have a new truck with the 10 speed, I see no good reason to trade.

I love 7.3 diesels but everything on 20yr old trucks starts to need bigger cost maintenance. Oil leaks are inevitable unfortunately.
I purchased my new 7.3 Stx for just over 44k, or You can get an xlt for under 50k.
If you are ready for a new truck I'm guessing your 7.3 will bring good money on the private sale.
Sounds like you would also have the time to wait on an order. It's so nice picking all the options you want and not paying for ones you don't.
Going to test a 7.3 gas today and a f450 just to add to the perspective. Water pump just let go on my truck, a 2003. Going to fix it and keep it but might be an idea to keep the 2001 and also get a 2020. At first at least, the 2001 will always bring good money if you ever make the final decision to sell.
